Built in log cabin style, the police
quarters at Telegraph Creek were quite
comfortable. There is a limited amount of
garden space in the settlement and anyone
garden-minded can employ his spare time
to advantage. With the long hours of sun-
light in the summer, vegetables grow at an
astounding rate. There are no domestic
cattle in the area so you live off the country
or on canned goods. Principal fresh meat
supply is moose, with an occasional change
to goat, sheep or birds depending on season.

The population is predominantly Indian
or half-breed. The Reserves at Tahltan and
Dease Lake have less population than at
any time in the past, the majority electing
to live on the Casca Reserve at Telegraph
Creek. Nearly every family has a trap line
but the lines operated by white trappers
are usually more productive as the white
man goes in for fur conservation.

During the past five years there has been
a lot of employment offering, due to the
construction of the Watson Lake airport.
But now with the completion of the Alaskan
Highway this has petered out, and most of
the freight for the Hudson’s Bay posts at
Dease Lake and down the Dease River
goes over the highway.

Trappers make a good living from mid-
November until mid-May. In the early
winter and up until the end of spring
marten, mink, ermine and: fox—generally
the fine furs—are taken, and in the spring
beaver is the main catch. The lower Stikine
abounds in beaver.

Besides those engaged in river work and

trapping, there is that band of indomitables
who look to the hills for their livelihood—
the prospectors. There are several good
placer districts in the area, especially around
McDames Creek. At Boulder Creek there
are half a dozen young-old men who make

a steady living. They just take out enough
gold to cover current expenses and a little
over, the idea being not to take too much
out of the ground at a time. Without
doubt the area between Hazelton and Atlin
offers enormous possibilities to the gold

seeker but there will not be much yield until

adequate transportation facilities are avail
able.

Packing, guiding and outfitting is big
business in this part of British Columbia
Generally a party will outfit for a 40-day
hunt, and these game enthusiasts leave a lot
of money in the country. This source of
income is something we should be wide
awake to protect and the answer is game
protection. Protect the game from the
depredations of predatory animals, prin:
cipally the wolf, and these visitors will come
year after year outfitting expensive parties.
As long as they get results they will’ cow
tinue to come. It has been estimated that
the potential value of a moose in money
left in the country is about $500.00 anda
mountain sheep, about $750.00.

So far as general police work is con
cerned, it’s perhaps more varied in a district
of this kind. Actual work performed, a&
it’s measured in cities and towns woul!
make the average policeman remark “ nal

However it must be remembered that #
police officer in the north represents a 1d
of government departments. Besides bein
a Game Warden he’s also a federal Custom:
Officer, and at times, unofficially, a doctof,
undertaker, guide and father confe sor.
And there are a lot of times due to isolation
and the special circumstances when the
usual rules of procedure are of little us.
