SKYLAB COMING T0 PRINCE DARCIE SMITH ARTS EDITOR The Prince George Public Library has been coming up with some exciting new ideas for renovation at the downtown Bob Harkins branch. The public adult computer area will be relocated to the far side of the top floor and transformed into the “SkyLab.” The mezzanine wil! create more space to add more public access computers and a funky study area for students and customers alike that will be on an upper level with a stunning view of the Prince George area. The upcom- ing Hot Blooded Ball! fundraiser at the Ramada will have a portion of the $80 tickets going towards covering costs for the SkyLab construction. The Project SkyLab will be a new social space for adult residents of Prince George to connect with each other and to the world, without sacrificing space for books and other library materials. Along with greater public access to computers and the Internet, many other changes to the adult floor are planned including a new information desk, new shelving, new stations to search the library catalogue and a new display space for the paperbacks. Lower Level The adult computer and Internet training classes fill up quickly and are regularly full. This expanded space will not only allow for more participants, but it is also open so that people can stand at the back and the sides to take in the in- formation. The lower level of SkyLab will be open and inviting to library visitors. When not being used for classes, the computers in the lower level will still be available for public use, while the screen will be used for marketing purposes, to promote upcoming library programs and services. Upper Level The upper level of SkyLab is the centerpiece of the entire adult floor renovation project. Sitting as a mezzanine float- ing above the second floor, it will offer computer stations with Internet access and printing capabilities on nearly 1000 square feet of new library space. Comfortable armchairs on one side will allow visitors to play chess or read, while other seating around the perimeter will let library users study or relax while enjoying the amazing views inside and outside of the library, including Connaught Hill, downtown and the city leading up to UNBC. Other Projects The Prince George Public Library is working on numerous other projects to improve both the Bob Harkins branch and the Nechako branch, including exploring other branch opportunities. More details are available in the Prince George Public Library’s five-year strategic plan, which is available at the library and on their new website. Other projects in the works include: * Nechako branch renovation ¢ Knowledge Garden (outside) * Service desk renovation on the main floor at Bob Harkins * Front entrance renovation Support the Library The Prince George Public Library’s goal is to promote civic literacy by providing equal access to information to all residents of the city and the surrounding district. The library provides the critical social space for people of all ages and backgrounds to read, learn and discover together. Since the library is a registered non-profit charity with its own board of directors, donations of more than $20 are eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. Fill out a donation card and help the library make the community better. Donations The library relies on grants from the municipal and provincial government for its operating budget, so the library has to raise its own funds for improvement projects like SkyLab. Your support of SkyLab will help the library fulfill its role as Information Centre for the 2015 Canada Winter Games while increasing computer literacy and access to library users unable to afford a home computer and access to the Internet. : yeo.. {nis {s Tiller, submit an article to over the edge over-the-edge@unbc.ca
