CAMERA. ON THAT NOTE | WILL LET YOU DRIFT BACK INTO THAT ALTERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE LIFE OF A UNBC STUDENT. HERES HOPING TO HERE FROM YoU! Poison Pen by Ian Lorenz Well last week was the first Poison Pen | have ever missed. | was on strike to protest...I’m not sure what, but | was pro- testing something. So what am | ticked about this week? Surprisingly very little. | was thinking about the lack of Men’s Studies courses at UNBC so maybe | will bitch about that. Since | can already see all the adoring letters to the editor, please note that this is not in any way an attack on the courses of Women’s Studies. | was promised a new and unique learning environment and what | got at UNBC was the same old shit. A university run by special interest groups and incompetent bureaucrats. When you people have managed to carve out of the bush on this little mud hill is neither new or different. | wonder if any of you have ever had an original or controversial thought in your miserable little lives. This University is exactly like all the others, except for the fact that it doesn’t fund anything that isn’t politically correct. Something new and unique that UNBC ‘might do is to have a course about the male gender. Before all you feminists start whining that all the history courses are about the male gender, let me remind you of Margaret Thatcher, Joan of Arc, Amelia Earheart, Mary Wilstonecraft, Queen Victoria, Eve, Pocahontas, Kim Campbell, Florence Nightingale, Marie Antoinette, Cleopatra, Winnie Mandella, Katherine the Great, The Suffragettes, Hilary Clinton, Anita Hill, Emily Carr, and Lizzie Borden. Not to mention 51% of the Russian serfs! History is history; it is genderless. And besides Woman's Studies encompasses much more than history. The reason ! have been thinking about this is be- cause one of my friends is in Women’s Studies and she is always talking about the neat stuff she learned and how much she loves the course. The next argument against a course in the study of the male gender, is always lack of interest or if it’s that important why doesn’t somebody put in the effort to start one. | think if the University were to offer a males studies course, worth 3 credit hours, they could manage to fill to the same level of similar courses. After all if there is enough interest to have the study of one gender, does it not stand to reason that there will be the same level of interest in looking at the other gender. Or does UNBC feel that only the female gender is important enough to warrant study? What could male studies courses look at? Well, Howard Stern could be considered the anti-feminist, so let’s throw him on the curriculum. Maybe we could try to understand why men seem to be more violent than women. Why are men more likely to be alcoholics and engineers? We could sit around an complain that women win custody of the children in 90% of divorce cases. Why are men still under repre- sented in careers like nursing? Why are men more likely to cheat on a girlfriend while women more likely to just fall out of love? Is affirmative action a sound policy? Should men have a say in the abortion of their child? Why have men noticed a marked decline in their influence in the business world while the same decline has been much less rapid in the domestic sphere controlled by women? Men and women think and act differently (that is a gener- alization, but it is also a fact). It may be socialization, hor- mones, or the patriarchy but we just aren’t wired up the same way. In toady’s politically correct climate we seem to forget that males have problems too. Women and minorities do not have a monopoly on injustice and ill treatment. So, is this University really all that new and exciting, or is it just inter- ested in following the more popular educational trend of the decade.
