Good Hope Lake’s trustee, Burgess Longson, was
back in town briefly last week complete with aluminum
cane. He has returned to Vancouver for surgery on his
back. We wish you a speedy recovery Burgess, and hope to
see you at the board table in late August.

Miss Claire Redmond is off to the university of Man-
itoba for her Sabbatical Leave year. Claire ‘will expand
her Early Childhood Education background and complete
work for her Masters Degree Preparation. Gaudeamus
Igitur, eh Claire!

Two locally developed courses, Science 9/10 (modi-
fied ) and Computor Science 9/10 received board approv-
al last week,

A few statistics from a recent survey of the use of
Micro Computors in B.C. Schools. S.D. 87 (Stikine) ranks:

No 1 in B.C. ... In terms ofStudents: Computors ratio
in Elementary Schools (73:1)

No 2in B.C. ... In terms of Students:Computors ratio
in Secondary Schools. (29: 1)

No. 2 in B.C. Overall.

These rankings are a great plus for the Stikine when one
considers the extensive individualized use which most
educational computing applications require.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

A procrastinator puts off until tomorrow the things he’s
already put off until today. ¢

Some teen-agers feel that once they pass their driving test
they should pass everything.

Prices are so high these days that even folks who don’t
intend to pay have stopped buying.

A class reunion is where you have a meeting with old
classmates to see who is falling apart.

CHRISTINA

Nothing was in the field when Christina and | played
there, except tall, tall grass. We played cars with the old
wood Dad carved for me, and house with the dishes Ma
didn’t want anymore. Of course we only had one real car,
and that was mine. Daddy wouldn't carve one for Christ-
ina because he didn’t believe she was real. He would al-
ways tell me, “Jacob, you are seven years old now. When
are you going to realize there is no Christina?’’ Sometimes
Daddy would be very indignant with me; those were the
times | wasn’t to go out of the house unless it was to

school and home directly afterwards. On those days Christ--:

ina played at my house, but she would never stay long.
She always said it was dangerous.

Daddy was a tall, skinny, dark man. He never really
got old, but he died when | was twelve. Christina and |
still saw each other then. Of course | never dared tell any
of my school-mates about her. | knew they wouldn’t be-
lieve me and think | was weird. When Daddy died, Christ-
ina helped me a lot. She told me that death wasn’t any-
thing to be frightened of. She told me that when you have
died, it means you have found a perfect age. | never really
understood what she told me, and | often asked her to
explain, but she never would.

Christina and | never remained close after | turned
sixteen. Ma and | moved to Idaho. |. met a nice girl, her
name was Karen. We fell in love and married.

Karen and | are still happily married, and we live a-
cross from the field. There is a movie theatre there now. |
am old and | have difficulty moving from place to place.
Karen, she is doing fine.

| now know what that little ghost Christina meant
when she told me, ‘When you die, that means you have
found the perfect age.’’ Christina found her perfect age
when she was nine. And then there is me, Ol’ Jacob. |
think | have found mine at the age of seventy-five.

Dear Mrs: Coran and Mrs. Jones:

The Board has directed me to respond to the letter
which you addressed to the Chairman, distributed to each
of the trustees, and published in the June issue of your
newspaper. :

“If by brought to our attention’ you mean your in-
terpretation of the paragraph headed “Indicators of Man-
agement Performance’ on page 9 of the Board Minutes
of the January 29th meeting, a simple explanation will
suffice.

Like your honest error in placing the Indicators arti-
cle directly under Mr. Corcoran’s by line on the School
District page, ours is an honest error. The error is one of
compacting two pieces of discussion into one paragraph.

Let me explain.

The first sentence - Sherry Sethan brought copies of
the February issue of the Cassiar Courier to the meeting -
is misplaced. It should not have appeared in this para-
graph. Mrs. Sethan’s purpose in distributing the copies of

» the Courier was to make trustees aware of the interview

questions and responses which were published in that
issue.

The Board’s discussion of the Indicators of Manage-
ment Performance focused on the Minister’s use of the
statistics. It was the Board’s opinion that the Minister’s
use of the statistics were biased and negative.

Mr. Corcoran’s concern re the positioning of the arti-
cle you handled most graciously in the following’ issue
and you have made reference to that in your letter.

Like you we made an honest mistake, a mistake in

reporting two separate items in the one paragraph.

STORE HOURS

The Cassiar Retail store will have new hours during
the vacation shutdown. Effective Monday July 4th
the hours will be:-
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
12:30 p.m. — 6:00 p. m.

There will be one truck delivery a week - on Mondays
Normal hours and truck deliveries will resume on
Monday August 15th.

now have a scarcity of mature bull moose and too few
cows of prime breeding age, and are declining as a result.
By applying a general open season on the plentiful im-
mature moose, and limiting the number of trophy bulls
and prime cows that hunters can take, wildlife managers
expect to restore a more natural balance and develop a
healthier, more productive moose herd. The cooperation
of hunters is absolutely essential if this is to happen.

Finally, Limited Entry may also be used to limit the
number of people hunting in places where too much hum-
an traffic might damage the environment.

WHY SHOULD INDIANS PARTICIPATE

Indians are not required to obtain licences for hunt-

ing, but have been asked to take part in Limited Entry
draws in the past in the interest of conserving our wildlife
resources. Many did even though the draws were set up

through the huntinglicence system, and they had no legal

obligation. Now there is a legal requirement. British Col-
umbia’s new Wildlife Act, proclaimed in 1982, provides’
for Limited Entry authorizations to be issued by means of
a lottery. Only residents of the province may take part in
any Limited Entry draw, and no one can participate in
a L.E. Hunt unless he or she has drawn an authorization
for that particular hunt. This requirement must apply
equally to all residents of British Columbia, including
Indians (except Indians in Treaty Areas), because Limited
Entry can’t work to conserve wildlife if any group of
hunters ignores the limits set. So the best reason for com-
plying with Limited Entry regulations is the same as be-
fore: Limited Entry helps preserve wildlife and hunting
and promises to bring about an improvement in both.

HOW TO TAKE PART

The Limited Entry Hunting Synopsis is available at
Ministry of Environment offices, Government Agents’
offices and many sporting goods stores, in May each year.
The synopsis shows the areas, season dates and types of
animals open to limited entry hunting. Maps of the L.E.
areas are included.

Application cards can be purchased for $3.00 where-
ver the synopsis is available. Instructions for filling out
the cards are given in the synopsis. The completed cards
must be mailed to reach Victoria before the deadline stat-
ed in the synopsis.

At the end of June a computor draw is held and
authorizations are mailed to successful applicants. Unsuc-
cessful applicants are notified also, and of course can take
part in the general open hunting season.

Smoke Alarm
Recall

WHITEHORSE - There is a strong possibility that some
Yukoners may be in possession of faulty smoke alarms-
now being voluntarily recalled by Honeywell Limited.
Model numbers are TC89B and TC89C. Both are battery
operated. They were sold in Yukon between January,
1976 and May 1978. ’

Yukon Fire Marshal Larry Hipperson-says he was notified
of the recall by Underwriters. Laboratories of Canada
(U.L.C.). : ;
“Apparently the faulty units respond to the test button,
but some may not respond to smoke, because of a poor
connection between two parts in the unit,” he said.
Hipperson says Owners of either model can check it by
snuffing out a lighted candle near the alarm. If the unit is
defective, the owner can call the fire marshal’s office at
667 -5217. People outside of Whitehorse can. call zenith
3003, local 5217.

Dease Lake
Airport

Approval has been given for a $500,000 grant from the
Province’s Air Transport Assistance Program to provide
paving for the Dease Lake Airport runway. Transportation
Minister Alex V. Fraser announced recently.

The grant funds will be made available to the Dease Lake
Airport Society, which operates the airport, to prepare
the existing gravel surface and to pave the 1,800 metre
runway with hot-mix asphalt.

The Minister said that the paving project will facilitate
access to northwestern British Columbia for mining explor
ation and development purposes, and permit the exten-
sion of the Province’s air ambulance service to the area.
The airport presently accommodates scheduled air carrier
service and water-bombing operations by the Forest Pro-
tection Branch.
