Manufacturers of FIR @ Phone: Knight Lumber Though it has two storeys, they just live on the first floor. None of the fixtures in the spacious kitchen have been specially designed for Mrs. Austin. The sink, cupboards, and stove seem hard to reach from a wheelchair, but she says she has no trouble. “I keep things I hardly ever use on the top cupboard shelves,” she ex- plained, “and put the things I use often on the bottom two shelves, which I can reach.” This gives Mr. Austin a task which he shares with countless other hus- bands — getting things down from high shelves and closets. His independent wife manages practically all the other household jobs without his help. He does hang out the washing for her, after she has done it in the automatic washer at one end of the kitchen. She finds the washer invaluable with clothes for four children to keep clean. Mrs. Austin says that coping with four children from a wheelchair is not very different from coping with them out of one. “You always have your hands full in either case,” she laughed. She runs the vacuum cleaner by following along after it in her wheel- chair, and keeps the floors gleaming with an electric polisher which she uses the same way. Shopping she does by telephone. Her husband does the outdoor work, of course, but no extra house- work, he claimed. Mrs. Austin feels that Vancouver Island is going to feel the lack of a rehabilitation centre for post-polio traffic officer has a tough job on a cold, wet day. But not in Milan, Italy! City officials there have voted to in- stall brellas and electric metal um- stoves in the stands from which police direct traffic. * NATAL Ice Cream — Head Office: Crows’ Nest, B.C. patients, “especially with all the new cases of polio this year.” The only one in B.C. is in Van- couver, she said. She was referring to a centre where adults could be treated, she explained, as children can go to the Queen Alexandra Solarium. “The step from a hospital bed to normal living is tremendous,” she commented. “It can be most frighten- ing.” Polio attacked her while the Austins were living in Toronto, and she con- siders herself fortunate to have been admitted to Lyndhurst Lodge Hos- pital there for post-polio treatment. Lyndhurst Lodge was originally bought by the government to be used for rehabilitating paraplegic veterans, and later as the need for this lessened, it was used for polio patients. There were about 30 patients in the hospital, so individual care could be given. “Nothing was done for us,” the young mother recalled. “You could struggle for an hour trying to do something, and eventually you think ‘Tl show you’ and manage to do it.” Patients weren’t taught to do speci- fic jobs, such as, in the case of a woman, housework. “The idea was to turn out people who were happy and adjusted,” Mrs. Austin explained. “If you're well- adjusted, you find out for yourself how to do things.” This has obviously been true in her own. case. Though she guides her house from a wheelchair, her husband and chil- dren live in a happy, smoothly- running home. * * mma ava a{| ALEXANDRA CAFE HOME COOKED MEALS Family Dinners on Sundays Our Specialty * ALL HOME-MADE PASTRY * Soft Drinks — ALL WHITE HELP Confectionery The Finest Cafe in the District British Columbia THE SHOULDER STRAP
