Wright, Vice-President Yorkshire Building 525 Seymour St. Vancouver, Canada Page Ninety-four and near him the two spoken of Indians, which had promised to help me. Now I went round to the front of the house calling on Lwieachelt and Stavanak to come along with me, but they were afraid. S-chueinoch however came along with me and we both entered the passage way. Stopping again here, I looked through the boards to be sure of my man and being convinced that there was no error, I went right to the fire before Taetak, S-chueinoch having a few seconds before taken a standing position to the right side of where I stood. Taetak did not suspect the least thing, quietly talking with the other Indians and I hesitated a few seconds scrutinizing my man and when I was perfect sure, I grasped him with my left hand, in my right hand the re volver, saying “I arrest you in the name of the Queen.” It seemed to me that éven then he had not a suspicion or that he was perfectly... - but as my grasp was firm, he commenced observ- ing my feet, then suddenly turning his face up- wards to me, he recognized my countenance, his eyes glowing like fire, a sure sign to me that he would struggle to the last. Up he jumped as quick as lightning, S-chueinoch putting his arms around his face, but the other two Indians did not come to my assistance at all Now we struggled for a few seconds, by which I told him, putting my revolver to him. that no harm should be done to him, if he would surrender and being bound by me, but he grasped my revolver with both of his hands for to ring it out of my right “hand. S-chueinoch put one hand on the revolver to counterbalance the effect. Now I was trying hard with my right hand to jerk the revolver out of his hands but as I saw that I could not sue- ceed, I let go my hold I had of him with my left hand and with all the strength I was able of I jerked the revolver through his hands, one shot exploding in an upward direction. Then I took hold of him again but by a very powerful and violent exertion he got loose and run, I, cocking the revolver ran after him and fired, just at the time when he was near out of my sight. As I supposed, that he had taken to the woods, I re turned to the water's edge opposite which my canoe lay and called for the canoe. “When I had fired the second shot, all the Indians around the house has dispersed from the scene of action but afterwards came to me, where I stood and asked me, how it came that I had not succeeded in binding him. I told them that those two Indians which had promised to help me had not stirred from the spot and that this was the reason of me not securing him, be- cause Taetak being more powerful than I. We continued to converse on the subject, when my Indians urged me to be quick off, because Taetak would steal along the beach and would shoot at us, as soon as he came in sight of my canoe. My mind was not made up what to do, when suddenly from an elevation near the lodgings a shot was fired towards us and we heard a war whoop. Shots and war whoops continued and the Indians told me that it was Taetak who give defiance to me. The Indians around me com- menced skinning away and getting to some shelter when I called on them to take him if possible alive, but if their own life was in danger they should shoot, promising 15 blankets whoever would take him. Several of the Indians went away to do so, likewise my three Indians and now commenced a fight lasting for about a quarter of an hour, Taetak shooting about ten times, always crying his war whoop and nearly shooting Stavanak, the ball going through his cartouche, destroying his shot and powder. After the last shot fell, I heard a particular war whoop and instantly the Indians around told me that Taetak had fallen. At the same time one Sleiamen Indian Shaetlaw came running to me and told me that he had shot the last, when Taetak fell and asked me to go to the body and take pos session of it. I went to it and saw the body laying. about 60 yards behind the lodgings on the edge of the woods. I have to mention that in this fight I did not take a part, as I con- sidered it perfectly useless, because I never could have recognized the features of Taetak at night in the woods and if avoidently or by mistake I would have shot another Indian, I would have been a murderer and accountable by law. But I was sure enough that an Indian would not make a mistake in the night. “T called on the Indians now, to get the body in my canoe, but nobody would touch the body from superstition but they had managed to get the noose of a line around his neck and were dragging him when seeing this I stopped it went to the canoe, took one of my blankets, rolling the body in it and dragged it alone along, as no Indian would put a hand to it. I had a great difficulty to get the body in the canoe, the In- dians hurrying me up as they were afraid some of the Seashell Indians might turn against me, the fatherinlaw of Taetak having done so ' Telephone PA cific 2132 SERVICE MESSENGER CO.
