His trial was ‘chiefly memorable for the unsuccessful contention by defending counsel that the victim had not died as a result of the poison, that if prussic acid had in fact been found in the body it was derived from the pips of many apples previously consumed by the victim, and finally, that she died “from some of the many causes of sudden death.’ Ever after- wards, counsel Fitzroy Kelly, who became Attorney-General and eventually Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer, was known as ‘Apple-Pip Kelly. The publicity given to the telegraph did much to prove its usefulness and thereby to encourage its development; but those planning communications on a more am- bitious scale continued to encounter preju- dice and derision, the reward of all pioneers. In 1850, for instance, when a Mr. Brett gained a concession to lay a submarine cable across the Straits of Dover, the project was regarded by the press as a gigantic swindle. It required a murder to demon- strate once more the value of good com- munications, for in 1864 a submarine cable was used for the first time to transmit in- formation concerning Franz Muller, who was wanted for the murder of a bank clerk in a London suburban train. Curiously enough, as Tawell’s distinctive Quaker hat (which he was not entitled to wear) con- tributed to his detection and arrest, so did Muller’s black beaver hat with a curled-up brim bring about his downfall. In the latter case Inspector Tanner’s indefatigable enquiries in connection with the hat (found under the seat in the compartment where the murder took place) pointed to Muller as the murderer; but by that time Muller was on the high seas in a sailing vessel head- ing for New York.
