News Parking fees REDUCED! by Charles Hogg Parking fees are being reduced at UNBC. According to Alistair McLean, Director of _ Services, the price reduction is due to his department. receiving government funds for the five emergency response systems on. the campus's parking lots. The price reduction . will amount to 5$ a month, : which translates into savings of 20§ a semester. Hearing complaints from both students and faculty, Mclean said he had already been looking for other ways to lower the parking fees before these additional funds were received, McLean also comments that he has heard a lot of thanks from people already about the reduction. This brings the UNBC parking price, $120 a semester with reductions, in line with many other BC universities. For instance the University of Victoria charges $96 per semester for parking, but these spaces are far away from campus buildings. The prices -that are better to compare with UNBC's are $112. UBC charges $360 for parking in an open search lot. Simon Fraser University charges $133 for parking as close as the lots at UNBC- and as little as 78§$ for the further parking. McLean also cites greater overhead costs of building a completely new lot as a reason for the somewhat higher costs at UNBC, but he also says that the ten year business plan takes these costs into account and that more savings could possibly be passed on the future,% over THE EDGE - Wednesday, November 30 , 1994 7 A HOME AWAY FROM HOME by Kellaine McKendrick Another student owing her time spent at the University of Northern British Columbia is among the numerous others involved in our foreign exchange program. Camilla Kyledal is here from Alvest, Sweden,a city of merely 8 000 people, and Vaxjo University, a school double in student body than our own. In Sweden, a post-secondary student must obtain at least fifteen points a semester for their classes in total, and then may proceed on into an upper level year. Camilla, engaged in English and Political Science at school back home, is here taking International Studies. : Spending the winter of '93 in Quebec City she studied French while attending Laval University, and then chose to reside in Toronto for a month:before returning to Alvesta. Camilla has evidently had an extensive Canadian experience, and as yet must still decide whether she is going to complete her education here or back home. She has recently started plans for the formation of a buddy system which is meant to help succeeding International students. Camilla is able to attribute her introduction to Prince George to her temporary host family as students from abroad were billeted for a week in September until the residences were completed. She feels this experience would help students next year and in the years following by providing information about the city itsif and of our phone and banking services. Students will certainly appreciate any help or hospitality offered to them when first arriving at Canada'a newest U. Great idea, Camilla! < Was McLean forced to work at McDonald's (top) after receiving a parking ticket? Not exactly. Left is Godfrey Medhurst, Director of Facilities, pointing at the ticket which was a warning to McLean, the man in charge of — parking fees, that making the rules doesn't mean you are exempt from them.
