First Nations, Inuit, and Metis have long been the victim of racism in Canada. The First Nations Centre at the University of Northern British Columbia provides many tradi- tional events that help educate students about the powerful, spiritual, and diverse ways of our cultures and traditions. In this sharing of our ways we endeavor to provide and strengthen relationships to combat relationships. -Paul F. Michel Nations Coordinator Northern Women’s Centre: “Feminism is the radical notion that women are peo- ple...” ...and people (and women) come in all sorts of different colours, sizes, and shapes. We need to keep in mind always that women’s rights are human rights; that what starts off as injurious words (verbal or written) can over. time and without chal- lenge, grow into heinous and atrocious acts of racism and discrimination. As such, we need to challenge those who make racist or judgmental statements in both our person- al and professional lives (e.g. “| don’t agree with you and this is why...”). Also, we need to recognize our own biases and prejudices - and we all have them - and explore why they are floating around inside of us. We need to remember that racism hurts the whole com- munity. It is like poison - do your part to stop it.
