A Second Job

Quickly forcing the main front door
they entered. The office where the
large safe stood, was facing the front
window, and they lost no time in
soaping around the edges of the door
of the safe. This done, the bottle of
nitro was cautiously uncorked and
the colorless liquid poured down the
cracks.

While they were thus engaged,
John McLeod, manager of the
Company boarding house across
the street, happened to see a
moving light in the office of the
liquor store, and the car parked
in front. He thought it unusual
to say the least and he phoned the
police that there was someone in
the liquor store.

In the meantime the watchman in
the theatre had been trying to free
himself of his bonds without success.
His captors had done a good job in
tying him up, but finally he managed
to get rid of the gag in his mouth,
and with the wall to assist him, he
worked himself to an upright posi-
tion.

The phone was right in front of
him on the counter, but he did not
know the number to dial for the
police. He did, however, remember
the number of the firehall. Leaning
forward he laboriously dialed it with
his tongue.

Immediately a voice answered and
he was able to convey a message that
there was something wrong at the
theatre.

In no time, Dave Gardner, the Fire
Chief and several firemen arrived.

They looked around but could see no
fire.

While they were wondering what
it was all about, one of them hap-
pened to look through the window
into the booth, and was startled to
see a figure doubled up on the floor.
The door was locked, so the Chief
despatched one of his men to get a
key from a theatre employee who
lived opposite the firehall, several
blocks distant.

He obtained the key and ran across
to the firehall, where he phoned the
police that there was a man tied up
in the ticket booth of the theatre.

While this was going on, John
McLeod decided to walk down the
street and see what was going on in
the liquor store, and attired in
pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers,
he sallied forth.

He hardly reached the sidewalk
when there was a crash as the safe was
blown. The explosion blew the large
main door of the sate across the office,
but the inner door of sheet steel was
