The bullet recovered from the house was compared by ballistic ex- perts with one fired from a 250-3000 Savage rifle found in his possession, and on examination it was established that it had been fired by that par- ticular rifle. Fawcett was committed for trial, but as he was at the time an escapee from custody under a sentence of five years, a stay of proceedings was en- tered, and he was returned to the penitentiary with an additional penalty for escaping. Fawcett Fills in Details On the journey from Vancouver to Powell River and back Fawcett be- came quite communicative with the officers who escorted him, and did not hesitate to fill in the details. He was quite frank and asserted “You have your racket and I have mine. Sometimes you catch me and sometimes you don’t; this time you win.” He then went on to say that had they not stopped to recover the bag of loot hidden under the bridge, the police would have never seen their car getting away. He said he was afraid the pursuing car had rifles, but when he heard the “pop gun” they had no further fears about making their escape, and had they been overtaken someone would have died. He went on to relate how they had returned to their camp in their boat from from the end of the road, lay hidden for a few days, and then had SE Toms Brothers Limited ESTABLISHED 1912 TRANSPORTATION AND FUEL Moving and General Transfers Office Phone 232 209 4th South Third Ave. Port Alberni, B.C. es TWENTY-SEVENTH EDITION British Columbia black mark — and no more passes. * traveled up Jervis Inlet to Sechelt In- let, where they had continued to its end. There they had sunk their boat, and carrying their equipment and out- board motor, had walked the quarter mile that separated Sechelt Inlet from the Strait of Georgia. It was not difficult to find another boat on the waterfront of Sechelt, into which they loaded their gear and engine and headed out along the shore for Vancouver, which they reached without incident. There was consternation in Powell River for some time after the safe- blowing, and the police came in for considerable adverse criticism, not altogether deserved, which resulted in transfers of personnel. There were four incidents in par- ticular of the affair, in which a vari- ance in any one, could have made the difference between escape and cap- ture of the bandits, or more unfor- tunate results from gun fire, for those taking part: 1. The police at Powell River did not receive the warning of a possible visit by Bagley and Fawcett that other places did. 2. The policeman who saw Fawcett in the beer parlor failed to recognize him. 3. The woman who saw the bandits at work on the theatre safe did not notify the police at the time. 4. The zeal of a young con- stable to take immediate action on his own, rather than await re- inforcements. At the time he had no idea that the safe-crackers would pause in their flight at the bridge, and so permit a well- armed party to overtake them. After a further series of lawless 1n- cidents on the mainland of B.C., Fawcett was captured as recounted above, and served his time in the penitentiary. Bagley escaped to the United States, to be followed later by Fawcett when he got out. Some REDMAN MOTORS LTD. Dealers in CHEVROLET and OLDSMOBILE CARS and CHEVROLET TRUCKS 316 Kingsway. Fawcett met dea‘h in a gun battle with a Sheriff in Oregon during an attempted bank hold-up. In the long run his racket did not pay. During their extensive attacks on society: in Canada and the United States, the team of Bagley and Fawcett enjoyed more than their share of “breaks” in the execution of their un- lawful acts, but in the final reckoning they had to pay the penalty demanded by society for their many crimes of violence. * * SOMERSET HOTEL Jim Laffin, Proprietor * LICENSED PREMISES on the Island Highway 7 Miles North of Nanaimo * R.R.
