Police Records show that nearly 70 out of every 100
serving terms in Oakalla have clashed with the
law before.

a first sentence, works out at nearly
63 per cent.

Taking the year’s figures for the
four prisons of Oakalla, Nelson, Kam-
loops and Prince George, the first
termers head the list of one group
with 2,782 but serving time with them
are 3,318 who have previously been
in prison.

Of the 3,318 recidivists, the second
timers head the list with 839.

Apparently the second term has a
chastening effect on a good percent-
age of them for the third termers
amount to little more than half that
number, 482. The third term, how-
ever, seems to deter but a few from a
life of crime for the figure is only
changed to 349 for those doing a
fourth term.
