I was accorded a very rare privilege in being shown all through the highly complex Communications Room of the Metropolitan Police. Hidden deeply in a bomb-proof shelter, the nerve centre of the most important urban area of the British Empire was well guarded against all possible forms of attack. SHoweEep Urmost VALUE IN WAR The main room housed most of the radio equipment and the various means of converting incoming information to the correct channel. All means of com- munication were to be seen in this room, telephone switchboards, teletype machines, telegraph, and the main police transmit- ter. A large model of London marked into various districts was in the centre of the room, within the red boundaries of any particular district were small model cars with an identifying number. As a car was directed to a particular duty a coloured disc was put over the model which remained there until that particular car had completed its mission and was again free for duty. A number of river patrol boats were radio equipped and were treated in the same manner as the cars. The system employed the Morse code exclusively, which meant an opera- tor must be in attendance at each car or boat receiver. I was informed by my guide that radio-telephone transmitters for headquarters and mobile units were planned for the future. WILSONA INN Mrs. A.
