VER THE EDGE. Volume 13, Issue 8 January 24, 2007 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Andrew Kurjata MANAGING EDITOR Aaron Widdis PRODUCTION COORDINATOR Tyler Clarke NEWS EDITOR Cameron Orr Ex-Editor-in-Chief : Andrew Kurjata is headed to the other side of the world Bye everybody! ARTS EDITOR Tabatha Lundholm PHOTO EDITOR Open, This | é aa I’m really not sure if anyone reads the editor’s message sec- tion of the newspaper, but on the off-chance that you do I will now make you privy to the knowledge that this is the last time (this year, at least) that I will be writing it. Because if everything goes ac- cording to the plan, by the time you read the next issue of Over the Edge, I will have departed this fair university for the great civil- ization of China. For about three years it has been on my “to do” list to live and work in a different country as an English-as-a-second-language instructor, and with the Beijing Olympics fast-approaching and English teachers in high-demand, now seems the perfect time to do it. Though I’m not going to be in Beijing I will be relatively nearby, in one of China’s “three furnaces”- - the city of Wuhan, in the Hubei province. I am proud of what has been accomplished with Over the Edge during my breif stint as editor-in- chief. A new format and a new printing schedule provided an ef- fective relaunch of a paper that has been around since UNBC’s in- ception over a decade ago, and the feedback has been very positive. I take my hat off to those who have been EIC before me, and offer warm wishes to those who will do it after me. It can be a frustrating, time-consuming job, but also an incredbily rewarding one. Though it is a small thing to students, see- ing someone reading an issue of COPY EDITOR Elizabeth Fyles AD MANAGER Kurt Nicholson FEATURES AND OPINIONS EDITOR Open SPORTS-AND CLUBS EDITOR Open TECHNICAL ADVISOR Open Over the Edge is the official independ- ent publishing media of students at the University of Northern British Columbia. As such, it is our mandate to report on issues of interest to students in the Northern Region. We encourage all students, both on the main and regional campuses to submit to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is part of the Canadian University Press network of papers, otherwise known as CUP. ing it-- can make all the differ- ence when you’re putting in long hours, unsure of whether any of it even matters. I don’t have any delusions of grandeur here, I know that we are little more than a momentary distraction, but I like to think that every once in a while we reach somebody on a deeper level, whether it be by tuming them onto a news story they wouldn’t have otherwise heard about or by exposing a local band to a larger audience. I would like to take this op- portunity to thank everyone who helped out in putting this together week after week. There are some very talented writers, photograph- ers, and artists within the walls of this school, and I am happy to have known you and call you friends. I suggest that anyone reading this take the time to seek these people out-- people working in the student government, over at CFUR radio, in the various clubs and organizations kicking around, and of course here at Over the Edge. If you have not yet done so, I would also highly recommend that you get involved in some of these organizations yourself-- I can say from experience that even though it takes‘a lot of extra work being involved in campus activ- ities is far better than solely going to class and then getting out of the school as fast as possible. And of course I would like to thank my girlfriend, family, and friends who have stuck with me even when I was spending nights asleep on the office couch trying to finish off production. I couldn’t have done it without you. Tm going to be kicking around the school for the next two weeks, transferring the reigns of power over to whomever takes my place, and will likely do some writing as well. After that I hope to be an overseas correspondent, sending tales of life in a land of 1.2 billion people. After that, who knows? I still have a degree to finish, so I should be back here in the near fu- ture. Hopefully Pll see you then.
