Phone Lake Cowichan or Duncan TWENTY-SIXTH EDITION I heaved and up she came. Arranging the balance, I wheeled the cart about and trundled off down the rocky road towards the detachment. Arriving at the gate, I simply let go the handle and the lady flopped on the ground into a large mud puddle. This revived her somewhat, and I was able to push, shove, and drag her up the stairs and through the office and into a cell. When I came out I heard some shouting, and noticed the Dominion Telegraph launch coming in to its anchorage just off the beach in front of the detachment. The spotlight was turned on, and in its beams I noticed two heads bobbing in the water. As I watched, the launch came alongside one of them, and a figure leaned down, reached for one, and dragged a man from the water to the deck of the boat. I did not wait to see the second man rescued but continued back to the hotel for McLeod. He proved to be more obstreperous than his wife, but after a short struggle I escorted him to the detachment and locked him in a cell next to her. Returning to the road I was met by Joe McDonald, the telegraph line- man from the launch, who informed me they had rescued Bill Harkness but Dan Scorby had disappeared in the meantime. They had spent some time circling the area where he was last seen but no trace of him could be found. Joe said the tide was running in and there was a swift under-tow which must have drawn him under and away. I went out with him and we searched again for some time without SUCCESS. When I got back to the house I discovered McLeod up and raving. I attempted to quiet him without much success, so I returned to bed. Our room was directly over the cells, and the racket below continued for some time. My wife appeared to be amused that McLeod was accusing me of being in the cell with his Celeste. The noise gradually died down to vague mutterings and finally there was a welcome silence. [ was up about six and got a boat and rowed out to see Harkness, who I found still sound asleep in his bunk on the troller. When I awak- ened him and told him of the loss of his partner he was dumbfounded. He hadn’t remembered a thing about being in the water, and wouldn’t believe me until I pointed out that his clothes were still wet. I got from him the address of Scorby’s wife in Vancouver and went ashore to the telegraph office and sent one of those wires that police hate to write. As the current from where Scorby had last been seen flowed under the cannery wharf, I notified all the employees and Indians to be on the look-out. I also engaged one Indian to keep patrolling the area in a boat. On the morning of the third day he came to report that he found COWICHAN MOTORS Ltd.
