Barb Sharp, a biathlon competitor, won all three of her races at the national team selection trials in Canmore, Alberta, during the December 11th to 14th competition, making her the senior women’s top racer, and in turn, sending her to Europe. Sharp, who left for Europe at the beginning of January, will be partici- pating in two sets of races ‘with the Europa Cup in France and Italy, against other European teams. The Europa Cup is only one level down from the top racers in the World Cup, and if Sharp performs as well as she did in Canmore, she has the chance to qualify for the World Championship team. The top two or three Canadian racers will have the. Opportunity to move up. Should Sharp qualify, she will be in Europe for five weeks, continuing to compete in biathlon. Also competing in Canmore were Ian Jackson arid Steven Duck. Both biathlon racers did very well, finish- ing in the middle of their fields. On the weekend of the 18th-21st, Sharp and Jackson, along with Scott McMillan and Katherine Scheck traveled’ tov Kelowna for’ the cross neh country North American Cup Race. In the women’s categories, Sharp finished 33rd in the 15km classic race and 32nd in the 5km skating race, while Scheck came in 34th in the 15km classic, 45th in the 5km skat- ing, and as the only one of the UNBC competitors to participate in the sprint races, she placed 38th. 8 For the men, McMillan won a sil- ver medal in his category of the 30km classic, and placed 3rd in the Kating. race. Jackson placed the 30km classic and 81st in the 10km skating race. Nordic Ski Team Coach, Tuppy Hoehn, says that December is a tough month for training and com- peting, as all the student athletes are also struggling to wrap up their school semester and study for finals. “In the two. sets of races, people did really well, especially being at the for end of the semester,” says Hoehn. “Now, as a team, our focus is on the next two BC Cup races.” » =A#BG. Cupscompetition=will be held in Prince George on January 24- 25, with the Western Canadian Championships in Edmonton on January 31-February | and the BC Championships in Vernon on February 14-15. UNBC’s Nordic Ski Team will continue to be busy as they host the Greenway Loppet in Prince George on February 22. Wintertime at the Fitness Centre Photo by Marlon Francescini Ice Skating is just one of the many winter activities offered through the UNBC fitness centre “UNBC is the perfect location to strap on some cross-country skis or snowshoes and head straight out the doors, into nature in its most perfect elements.” By Jessica Johnson For those of you needing a break from studying already, opportunities abound right on campus, if you can brave the frigid north- ern air. UNBC’s Fitness Centre offers a varicty of activitics all year round, from yoga to rac- quetball, but when winter hits, it brings along a fresh layer of snow, and with that, a fresh new list of outdoor sports. UNBC is the perfect location to strap on some cross-country skis or snowshocs and head straight out the doors, into nature in its most perfect clements. With direct access to the numerous trails of the Cranbrook Hill Greenway, the scenery is nowhere morc peaceful, and certainly nowhere more conve- nient, Skiers can also head over to Otway, where the student rate for using the trails is only $5. No equipment? No problem. For cross- country skiers, the Fitness Centre offers rentals on a daily or weekend basis, at prices of $12 and $36, respectively. This covers everything: skis, poles, and boots. Snowshoes are $10 for the day and $25 for a weekend. The Fitness Centre has also prepared an ice rink for those more comfortable on skates in the winter. The ice rink is a frec-for-all, with no sct schedule. Skating and hockey is welcome, however equipment is not available for rent. The Fitness Centre promotes activity throughout all scasons, so for more informa- tion, visit the front desk. And remember, with all of these opportu- nitics available so nearby, there is no reason to complain about the cold winter months - just enjoy it while you can.
