“Women or Rex” from page 5 to-it. The feminist cause will make its greatest stride when it realizes one thing: their or anyone else's opinions are merely opinions, not laws of the land. Alienation into a sanctuary and crying oppression only makes me and countless others lose respect for this cause and its believers. If this piece offends some, which is not _ its intention, I offer no apology. To become offended by an article of this nature only proves my point of people becoming so uptight and reactioinary, so protective over something that meeds no protection. Sexuality is inherent; it cannot be destroyed; it can only be defined by those who hold it. The women in the group have become so enthrawled in the ideology of their cause; failure on any level automatically boils down to sexism and not personal inadequacy. What results is a group who accepts adversity and, instead of battling through an obstacle, initiates blame on someone other than themselves, resulting in an easy way out of many problems. I would like to hear the women's group blame themselves for their inabilities, whatever they may be and take responsibility for failure and admit to a poor performance in a given situation. This results in accomplishments due to abilities and when this occurs, only when this occurs, has true progress been achieved. They may notice that victory through attrition is a great feeling and it makes for stronger individuals which is what the world really needs. To reiterate my intentions, this was not meant to offend; it was aimed at a very small population of people at the University to illustrate how I feel. However I'm sure many will take offense to it. If that is the case, so be it. Do not become a male-basher; many men will disagree with this also. Instead take pen to paper and write a response for or against this piece. That is its true intention. By Jan Malcolm Equal Rights? I believe I am amongst the majority of people who support equal rights for women. However, I have become disillusioned with the Women's Group at UNBC who have gone far beyond lobbying for equal rights. The Women's Group is taking a step backwards, hindering its own cause by creating a less than positive image of itself and its members. It seems in the short period UNBC has been open that the Women's Group has already begun a brash campaign to assert its presence on campus. Its goal appears to be one of intimidation in that one of the main purposes in its agenda is vehement ' opposition against anything that may incidentally infringe upon their female identities. | The Women's Group has slighted itself by dispersing pamphlets which characterize the male sex (as a whole) as responsible for the horrors of domestic violence, and by over-analyzing the university newspaper in search of possible derogatory statements about the female sex. Their actions convey the message that all or even most evil stem from a "dominant male society". Such notions are indeed realistic, unfair and destructive as they place blame squarely on all men-not because they are necessarily guilty of some heinous crime but rather because they are men. To many students, male and female, the Women's Group is damaging the perception of women, while conjuring a .egative atmosphere around UNBC. They appear less interested in working toward a productive goal as they are with searching for compensation for unsubstantiated claims of oppression and sexism. Perhaps it is more tragic. that these individuals, while trying to gain more freedom and rights, inhibit those of others. But if I ever say anything, they make me out as a Danny Tanner cleaning freak. What canI do? Desperate Dear Desperate, Well, “when in Rome..." It sounds like you're outnumbered so you might as well join them. Let the place go for as long as you can handle it and hope that you have more determination than they have tolerance. Hopefully they'll get sick of the mess and clean it up themselves. Of course the only real long term solution may be for all of you to go your seperate ways. And if you really are the Danny Tanner Cleaning freak your roommates make you out as, then either chill or screen your new roommates.
