January 25th and 26th. The indoor soccer tour- nament was played at the Roll-a-Dome and brought out 15 teams in two divisions. UNBC’s 2nd team was in the Recreational Division, and despite playing three very close games were unable to advance from their group. The Women’s ist team played in the Competitive Division and posted 2 wins and a tie in their first three games. This was good enough for first place in their group and a spot in the semi finals. On Sunday UNBC’s regular goalie was unable to play so it was Jess Harcombe who stepped in after having not played goalie for over a year. They won their semi final match by a score of 2-1 and would face Prince George’s own 24 Hour Fitness in the final. After being tied at 1 after overtime shootouts would be the decider. Both Lia Thiesmann and Kalliopi Kollias managed to score for the Timberwolves but it was not enough. Despite 2 huge saves by Jess, 24 Hour Fitness scored 3 times to seal the win and the title. . Kaliopi was the tournament's top goal scorer,: while Erin Hillen received MVP. By Rob Miller The ladies soccer team came within 1 goal of winning the black- burn cup. When Kyle Runzer Forecasts Powder, Bring Your Snorkel, Cuz He Means it By Austin Naim The Outdoors Club had it’s annual Ski Trip to Smithers over Super Bowl Weekend and while some were drinking beer and eating pretzels we were skiing the pow. Outdoors Club President, Deanna Danskin did a great job of organizing the trip which brought out almost 50 people. Students stayed in luxury accommodation (an elementary school gym floor) and were treated to live music. Kyle was right about the con- ditions as the entire mountain was covered in knee deep powder. This was the second time in the last few weeks that many of us had made the trip to Smithers. This is because 2 weeks prior Jesse Anaka offered an Avalanche course to 10 members of the outdoors club. Jesse, a Professional Avalanche Level 1 taught those in the course all of the key elements of Avalanche safety. The course was extremely well done and included 2 in class sessions which focused on topics such as terrain traps, warning signs, depth hoar and surface hoar. We then went to Smithers for two days to complete the on mountain training which involved digging avalanche By Deanna Danskin Kyle Runzer tests the snowpack in a recent avalanche course. x Counselors: Combined chiidcare/teaching. We also used beacons and probes to rein act avalanche rescues. Jesse will likely be putting on another course after reading break and those interested can talk to Deanna at the Outdoors Club meetings which are held on Thursday nights at 6:00pm in room 5- 168. | What I have found the most exciting part of the last two trips to Smithers is a little place called the Garage. The Garage is Smithers’s only night club and is right up there with well known hang outs like The Attic and The Dumpster. Although atten- dance was low both times I have gone there the number of bad dancers was _ not. Anything seems to go in this place including playing Christina Aguilera’s Dirty on an hourly basis. As both my friend and I discovered the girls there see it necessary to slap the ass of their dance partners regularly. It seems surface hoars are not restricted to the snow pack. It is rare to find a place with such charac- ter and it is one I will definite- ly revisit the next time I am in Smithers.
