Bulman-Fleming, S. E., to A/Cpl. Page Eighty May 11955 May 1, 1955 SUB-INSPECTOR E. A. F. HOLM Well-known Vancouver Island police officer, E. A. F. Holm, has been promoted from staff sergeant to the commissioned rank of sub- inspector. A native of Prince Rupert, he joined the former B.C. Police force in March, 1935, and served at Campbell River. Che- mainus and Victoria. He jotned the R.C.M.P. when it superseded the provincial force in 1950. A “DRUNKOMETER” THAT SHOULD GET RESULTS The Kent, Washington, Police De- partment believes they have the ulti- mate answer to the question—when is an individual under the influence of intoxicating beverages. And it’s no “gadget.” It’s in the form of a two-headed, or is it a one-headed, calf. It’s a little brown calf that looks real. In fact, it was real at one time. -When inebriates see the two- headed, or is it one-headed, calf, they'll really begin to wonder. Kent policemen have high hopes the calf may make them even “swear off.” According to Mayor Dave Mooney, who stored the calf in his garage for several months, the calf was actually born on a valley farm some years ago. Later it stood in the display window of a local tavern. Now the calf is where it can do some real good—to determine whether or not a man is drunk. The officers have been toying with some sort of routine like this: Officer: “See that calf?” Inebriate: “Yes.” Officer: How many heads has it?” Inebriate: “One—No wait, two. Ofticher, I’m not so shure.” Officer: “You must be drunk.” Whatever the answer, one head, two heads, the drunkometer is sure to work. THE SHOULDER STRAP
