ae Yb Port of Stewart. Recent reports outline the possible mineral production in the area and the following Exhibit 2.7 summarizes the findings of these studies .©/ Exhibit 2.7 shows that an estimated 446,000 tons a year of inbound freight and 560,000 tons of outbound freight could conceivably use the route in trans- porting materials and supplies into the mines and mineral products out to market. 2.5.2 Alaska Highway Pipeline Project (Alcan) The proposed Alcan natural gas pipeline project, which is planned to be routed through the Yukon Territory and northern British Columbia, could have an economic impact on northern British Columbia. Current logistics planning for transporting materials and supplies to the construction sites for the pipeline indicate that Vancouver-Haines/Skagway (Alaska)-Yukon Territory and the Alaska Highway will be the principal routings. % However, improved port facilities at Stewart and reclassification of the Cassiar to Stewart Highway as a Resource Road could divert some of the anticipated con- struction tonnages from using Alaskan ports and transportation systems. Exhibit 2.8 which follows on page 16 shows a summary of the possible construc- tion tonnages which could be diverted. 6/ a) Mineral Production and Projected Trends 1974-2000 in Northern British Columbia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories; We Healdath Consultants, January 1975. b) Kitimat-Stikine Regional Development Plan, Reed and Associates, January 1973. c) Brief submitted to the Royal Commission on the British Columbia Railway, Ministry of Mines and Petroleum Resources, June 1977. ————————EE EE
