1 would like to introduce the new staff at the Recreation Hall: John Hunter, well known to you Hockey Fans for his scoring ability, came to us from the Tram- line with his hopes to learn a little about the field of recreation as he is planning on completing his educa- tion and going into this field. Wendy Hunter, John's sister, came from Vancouver and is here on a Student Aid Program Grant. Wendy gave up a season of Senior A Softball to come here so that she also might get better acquainted with recreation work. She will be going back to school with her goal being the recreation field as . her vocation. Marie Borsato, local home grown product is also with us on a Provincial Govt. Recreational Aid Grant. Remember, we are here to help you in any form of recreation you might desire, so feel free to ask any of the staff for assistance when you visit the Rec. Hall or playing fields. With the advent of Cassiar Summer?? - Softball has been organized and is now underway with the Mens League playing Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday Evening. If your not on a team and wish to be, drop over to the field and join up. The Ladies play Mondays on the main diamond and Wednesdays on the school diamond and there is still room for more players in this League. If you do not play come on out and support them with your cheers. By the time this goes to press the Soccer should be underway too. They are playing Wednesdays and Friday nights with practises on Saturdays. This will be a 9 man team league as the field is rather short for regula- tion size teams. If you're interested in playing this season come on out, there is always room for one more player, referee or linesman, etc. A regulation size Horseshoe Pitch has been built along side the Rec. Hall and shoes are available from the staff in the Hall. If enough interest is shown a tournament will be organized, so drop over with your neighbour and have a game! Badminton has slowed down a bit Fe to the fact that there is a shortage of shuttlecocks in B.C. and we have to wait till our back order is filled. This is caused by the shortage of plastic brought on by the fuel shortage a while back. “Tennis ts picking up now that the weather has improved. Rules for court use are posted on the fence so that all might enjoy the game. Please observe the rules. For those interested, we now have a supply of tennis balls for sale. I can sell a limtted nunber of tennis balls at cost, 3 for $4.00. Tennis racquets will be available for sale soon. NEWS The Lions Pool is undergoing repairs at the present time, work has started on the new Pump House at the back and should be completed shortly. Plans for the new dressing rooms are back in town so these should be under- | way shortly. I certainly hope that there will be swim- ming for at least part of the summer this year, but better to have lost 1 years swimming than to have an out- break of infections due to improper facilities. Some construction activity on and in the arena has been noted. The arena has been insulated inside and a new roof has been put over the lounge. We should not have any leaks next winter. Two new trophy cases were also put in the arena lounge for Minor Hockey and Senior Hockey Trophies. The lounge is also used in the summer for small private parties such as farewell parties etc. The Arena Association is in the process of planning another Giant Bazzar and anyone having ideas or worth- while articles to donate. for re-sale may leave them at the Rec. Hall. The Provincial Government Grant for renovations to the pool and the arena has still not been finally approved. Although it looks as though we will be getting it once all the papers are completed in Cassiar. CHILDRENS SUMMER FUN PROGRAM There will be a Summer Fun Program for the children of Cassiar and surrounding district as soon as school is over for the year. This will take place at the Lions Childrens Playground on the south end of Malozemoff Avenue. We plan to organize activities Monday through Friday. Young children at 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon and the older children 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. This program should give the parents a chance to work in the garden or just relax without worrying about their young- sters for a couple of hours a day. We hope all children will take advantage of this chance at organized fun and mayhem in order to reduce the latter we hope the children will co-operate with the leaders. A Benefit Dance was held from 9:00 - 1:00 Saturday night, June 15th at the Rec. Centre. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate those who attended the dance on their good behavior. Since rowdyism and rough stuff was kept to a minimum we look forward to more successful dances like that one in the future! Frank McLean Recreation Director
