The degrees for John Furlong and Dr. Cindy Blackstock will be part of the 2012 convocation ceremony on May 25th 2012. Honorary degrees at UNBC are presented to individuals who display the highest levels of achievement in public service, the arts, busi- ness, politics, environmental stewardship, and community development. Past recipients have included Rick Hansen, Bill Reid, and Iona Cam- pagnolo, Dr. Blackstock is a member of the Gitksan Nation who has worked in the field of child and family services for over twenty years on policy, professional development, and research. Dr. Blackstock has published numerous re- OPEN DOORS, GO PLACES search papers, articles, and curriculum related to Aboriginal child welfare in Canada and has received several awards recognizing her contri- butions. Dr. Blackstock has become one of Can- ada’s leading advocates for improving the lives of aboriginal children through restoration of the essential parenting and sound family structure, and has developed an international role helping to develop the lives of children in vulnerable populations throughout the world. John Furlong is known for having run the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, but his history with Northern B.C. dates back for four decades. Furlong was a resident of Prince George in the 1970s when he founded the Northern B.C. Winter Games, which the city was hosted in 1978. He chaired the B.C. Summer and Winter Games Society and as Chair of Sports B.C. was instrumental in bring- ing the B.C. Winter Games Master of Science in Management John Furlong and Dr. Cindy Blackstock will be part of the 2012 convocation to Prince George in 1986. Furlong believes that sport brings out the best in people and UNBC will honor the best in John Furlong. His nom- ination is particularly relevant in the contexts of Prince George’s successful bid to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
