JACK ANDERSON, A REAL PHILOSOPHER

There was a big Irishman, Jack Ander’
son, up at Clayoquot, a remote seagull
haven up the west coast of the Island, in the
early °20’s. He was a real philosopher, was
Jack, even when, in response to his urgent
requisition for coal for fuel, someone in
headquarters office, with a mordant sense
of humour, sent him a bucksaw. Those were
the days before the trim, fast power boats
of the B.C. Police clove the restless waters
of that graveyard of the Pacific. Anderson’s
patrol cruiser was a vast and wide and
cumbrous rowboat which he called “The
Ark”, propelled by oars that would have
shamed telephone poles. He told me that
he never ventured too many miles offshore
with it—he was afraid he might become
lost in reverie, or in reciting the many
romantic passages to be found in the
Criminal Code, and suddenly find himself
in China and facing a charge of A.W.O.L.

I still see him sitting in his little office in

. a high stew of perturbation, confronted by

an extra man-size problem which I had un-
wittingly thrust upon him. A big crowd of
Indians had been arrested for potlatch activ-
ities—there were about 20 of them, and the
first hurdle was their safe incarceration in
durance vile. They could not be set free,
pending trial, because summonses, pre-
viously served upon them by a Dominion
official, had been treated with derision and
contumely. But the plot thickened after the
trial, when all the braves refused to pay the
fines imposed, and decided to martyr them-
selves by suffering the alternate jail
sentence.

“And how, by Saint Pathrick,” Ander-
son wailed, ‘would I be supposed to herd
this mess of malefactors to Oakalla?”

Knowing that the good old steamboat
Maquinna only called at Clayoquot thrice
monthly, I sympathised deeply, but with a
grin that was too obvious, and I had to duck
