CANINE DISTEMPER HITS NORTHWEST ‘A rash °©of reports from Terrace, Kitimat and Fort Nelson areas indicate that .an epidemic of canine distemper is sweeping across Northwestern B.C. The distemper is caused by a virus spread by inhalation. Dogs can breathe in the virus from other contaminated dogs. The disease is also spread by some wild animals such as wolves. coyote, and raccoons and is found in their stool and urine. Cats and other domestic. animals are not affected. Puppies are often most affected but unvaccinated adult dogs are also susceptible. The disease acts on the dog's nervous, respiratory and intestinal systems. Early symp- toms can be detected in a dogs eyes, which appear red and a yel- low discharge will be noted in the eyes, dogs may appear to re- cover only to suffer more seriuos complications such as seizures and eventual death of the animal. Vaccination is the only pre- vention and pet owners are ad- vised to have their animals vac- cinated to prevent the spread of this disease.
