Page Thirty-four “Oh Aligoomiak—he’s all right,” grinned Doak. “Bawled him out this morning—he'll get over it!” Eyes Smouldered Rebellion When Binder departed at mid- night, promising to make his usual afterbreakfast call next morning, Doak glanced at the recumbent form of the young Eskimo upon the floor, rolled in his eiderdown and promptly fell asleep. But the Cogmollock wasn’t sleeping. Instead he watched Doak’s corner from under the cover of his shingabee with black beady eyes—eyes that smouldered with re- bellion. Out at the Eskimo seal-camp next morning, Clarke and Woolams de- cided to go further afield in search of seal. As they potted the bullet- headed mammals and grabbed them ere they could slide back into the sea, Woolams’ attention became fixed on a swift-moving dog-team being driven frantically from the direction of the seal-camp. Time and again the wicked 18-foot walrus hide lash rose and fell with a report like a rifle shot accompanied by the terrified howling of the racing sleigh-dogs. With hearts somehow full of fore- boding he and Clarke waited. Jerking his dogs to a halt, the Cogmollock exploded in a torrent of guttural Eskimo. “Aligoomiak!” Silas turned frozen- faced to the Mountie, “he killum Doak! Kill’um Binder! Come seal- camp with gun,” he met the aston- ished eyes of Woolams, “for kill you, too!” Pale and speechless, unable to re- alize the full portent of the Eskimo’s dread message, Constable Woolams learned that shortly after he and Clarke had departed that morning Aligoomiak had arrived, rifle in hand, at the seal-camp, intending to shoot both the remaining whites, appropriate the Mounted Police dogs and return to his people. Only the fact that they'd gone further afield had probably saved them from being surprised and murdered in cold blood. Taku, the head man at the camp, had secretly despatched his son to warn the whites while his wife was feeding the hungry young Cog- mollock. “For Christ’s sake!” Woolams leapt for his sled, his snapping lash sending his huskies hurtling over the sea-ice. The constable’s mind was in a tur- moil. Bill Doak dead! Taku’s son must have got the story all cockeyed. He laughed hoarsely, a shaft of relief piercing the black cloud of oppression. Sure—that must be it! Aligoomiak had given Doak the slip and now he was throwing his weight around just to impress the other Cogmollocks! Menacing Muzzle As Taku’s igloo loomed before him, Woolams sprang from his sled, dived into the snow-tunnel and stumbled. Next moment he found himself gazing into the menacing muzzle of a Winchester. Along the shining barrel Aligoomiak’s sloe-black eye leered in murderous hate. He caught a con- fused glimpse of fur-clad figures in the blood-red glow of the flickering kudlik, staring eyes in oily faces and white bared teeth—then the igloo rocked to a thunderous detonation, Orange flame flashed in his eyes. A bullet nicked his ear. Hot anger seered within him as he leapt upon the youthful savage. Greasy hands thrust a rawhide line into his. Twist- ing it around the flailing wrists he yanked the prisoner through the icy tunnel, lashed him roughly on the sled and with a crack of his walrus- hide lash sent the huskies careening franctically towards the barracks 15 miles way; Silas, Clarke and Tata- magama padding swiftly in the rear, Reaching the trading post at last, IZ Le, Sin UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT * A Thoroughly Modern Fully Licensed Hotel * Close to Railway Depot KAMLOOPS B.C.
