SAFETY NOTES January lth and the day broke mildly under grey clouds at Cassilar. This was a pleasant respite from the previous biting cold. A normal day shift began on the tram- line and continued so for the first hour. | Full buckets of ore trundled in orderly procession down the mountain side, But ' suddenly the tempo quickened, the line began to sing and buckets came hurtling through the stations. Down in No.3 station at the plantsite, Charlie Bronson, Plant Superintendent, pressed the emergency step button without immediate response. Up at No.2 station, swing operator, Lew Palmer, seized a bar, ran to the thruster brake and by prying with the bar succeeded in activating the brake and the line stopped. This action may have stopped the line in itself, or it may have taken effect in conjunction with Mr. Bronson's action at No.3 station. the point is that the operator displayed a cool head, and his action was a timely effort toward the prevention of possible injury to others, and perhaps serious property damage. In commendation of this action, manage= ment at. Cassiar wish to extend to Mr, Palmer their sincere appreciation and thanks for displaying courage and prompt action above and beyond the line of normal duty. N.B. The cause of this accident on the tramline has bem found and rec~ tified. ©. Church Chemistry Professor : "What is the out- standing contribution chemistry has made {| _ to the world ?"
