Womyn’ by Lauren Bacon and Tobi Araki This is an ongoing column highlighting events, monuments, services, and issues pertaining to women of UNBC and beyond. Anyone may submit input or event information to Tobi or Lauren at the UNBC Women’s Centre or c/o Over The Edge. Moms On Campus There is a new service being offered through the Women’s Centre this term: a Moms On Campus support group is being formed for any interested mothers at UNBC. Mim Hughes, a full- time student and mother of four believes that women juggling their responsibilities at school and at home as well as a variety of other possible stress factors (job, relationships, financial troubles), have need of a safe and friendly space where they can let their hair down, and talk about the conflicting feelings and pressures involved. She hopes that the Moms On Campus group can fill that need. Moms on Campus will be a forum for exchange of ideas and feelings around issues such cont'd from page 2 faculty Deans and Chairs of programs that are already overworked; reasons for doing this were to save money (surprise!), and the lesser authority on decision making and fragmentation of faculty. By the way there are no new undergraduate programs proposed and currently are running to stay even; there is some graduate program expansion proposed. So while waiting in line to pay for fees consider yourself lucky you are not footing the entire bill, even though it may seem like it! The University is not here to rip us off with astronomical prices - on the contrary tuition is quite fair compared to other Universities, but they are here to make a profit, and if they don’t we all loose without some kind of government subsidy. Now for some news from the NUGSS office: We bought a new PA system which is quite s Work as guilt, school pressures, budgeting, relationships and especially what Hughes calls “self-care”. Many women going to school and caring for children are so busy that they have trouble making time for their own needs. Hughs, currently studying towards both a Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts, has both personal and professional experience with he unique set of demands which is placed on mothers at universities. Before returning to school, she worked in personal and job counseling, and aims to use her degrees towards a career as a practicing therapist. She began her studies at UNBC in September and saw the need for a support network for women in similar situations. With her enthusiasm and expertise, Moms On Campus promises to be a significant addition to the support services available on campus. Mothers at UNBC who are interested in joining Moms On Campus are encouraged to leave their names on sign-up sheets posted in the Women’s Centre and in the NUGSS office, or call 960-5632 for further information. nice, and can be used as well for smaller dances. The radio club will basically run the show, as they now have an extensive music selection with all sorts of good stuff, I think for a small fee or donation (to them not us), you can use their services; if interested in this please see April our Office Manager. Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is coming up at the end of January, and there will be a number of amendments to the Society’s Constitution, so if you don’t want to see us get an all expenses paid trip to Mexico during Spring Break (paid with your fees) you should show up and cast your vote. The Pub/Student Activity. Building is a very interesting topic from my perspective, and I personally have new appreciation for what it took to get the existing buildings! From the positive support and input we’ve had, the basic Saga yet. I'll start by... studying. ME: Uh, no. ME: My what?!? improve. Bergman in Casablanca. concept is getting our OW student union building, not one owned by the University. We have discussed this with Dr.Jago, and he is willing to look at any proposal we put forward to President’s Council (the Big Wigs on Campus). The first hurdle is to get a secure long-term lease from the University for some land ($1 for 100 years has been done at other institutions). From there we figure we have enough in the “building fee” fund (about $115,000) I think, to get the architects who designed the campus up here again and tell them what we want with our space allocation. Ideally, a set of blue-prints could be drafted and from there it would be up to us to put together a formal presentation for corporate sponsors (NOT ICL and Pepsi). I know this sounds too «good to be true, but if we don’t start anywhere it will be Cafeteria lunches, smoking out in the rain, volleyball in Student Success? The by Jason ME: Happy New Year and welcome back. SABINA: Thanks, how were your holidays? ME: Good, it was a nice break. I’m not sure I’m ready to get back to school SABINA: I know what you mean. I have to get a plan here. My grades last term were all right but my parents think I can do better and so do I, so my New Years resolution is to get better grades this term. ME: How are you going to do that? SABINA: I’m not sure. I guess a good plan to start would be by doing the LASSI thing. CRAZY GUY ON BUS (BOB): I always liked that show, wholesome, good karma... | ME: How is watching a show about a dog going to help your grades? It’s the back to fundamental, wholesome approach to life isn’t it. I could do that. SABINA: Not the dog! That thing they have at the Learning Skills Center. It is like an inventory of your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to ME: My study habits are fine. SABINA: Do you review your classnotes and I don’t mean the night before the exam? SABINA: How is your information processing? SABINA: See, you may think you are doing fine, but the LASSI can show you places you could ME: Maybe I’ll look into it. By the way, I like your new haircut. It makes you look like Ingrid -gym, a spa that’s nice to look at, pricey bevies, and no more new office space for other student clubs and associations. Your ideas and comments on this are like taking first steps in comfy new shoes, please forward any you have to the NUGSS office. Lastly, we will be putting on less dances ourselves, it is hoped that clubs will take some responsibility of setting the pace for entertainment and traditions. The NRS Beer Bash,-and the Outdoors Club dance were. both very successful. We will continue to partially fund events like this if needed, provided that your club exists and has it’s shit together. In the next issue of Over The Edge, I would like to have a questionnaire for you readers to fill out, as well as a section on what interests you may have sitting in on some of the many Committees, since most of them are grossly underrepresented by students (Parking Committee, PSAERASHRRSHSARSEREARERKERERSL SO EAM RA RRESSE SSRRSHE SE omputer Users Committee, Campus Health and Safety Committee to name a few) as well as a draw for a cool prize. I still have to tell everyone else at NUGSS about this idea, but I just thought of it so | thought I’d put it in. My office hours are Thursdays 2 - 4 inthe NUGSS office, stop by for a chat.
