yek Page 12 March 1986 Cassiar Courier More Community Club News........... GAMES, GAMES , GAMES, GAMES, GAMES!!! As February rolls to an end, March brings not only what southeners call Spring, but a slew of competitive and friendly games. At the end of this month, our local resi- dents Atul Kaul and Blythe Grimmeth will be travelling to Terrace to play Badminton in the Northern Winter Games. As well, Dan Andrews will be down to compete in the weight lifting competition. We all share the excitement and anxiety these atheletes feel when training for high profile games such as these. We wish all three of our locals the best in their matches. One of the biggest events for Cassiar ever to host is the upcoming Northern Invitational Friendship Games. Over 200 athletes are expected to take part in what we hope will be a sporting and cultural extravaganza. The em- phasis im these games is for our young people to try a new sport of their choice, at a recreational level, and to pro- vide am opportunity for a cultural and spiritual expansion ~ in themselves. A great deal of work has gone into the sec- ond N.I_F.G_, and the expectations for a memorable week- end are shared by all. The township is invited to share in these experiences and to become a part of this year’s Games. On a final note, March also heralds the C.C.C. annual Schmoo Daze Carnival. Preparations for this year’s carnival are underway at the present time, and we ask all interested people in town to come down to the meetings with their input, and to find out how they can be involved in our annual Schmoo Daze Event. To give you an update on what we are doing in the arena at this time and let you voice any concerns you may have with regards to the general operation and condition is the purpose of this letter. At this time, we are in the process of major ice maintenance to ensure excellent conditions for the tournaments up ahead. As well, a complete re-alignment of the tractor and Zamboni is eminent. This we hope, will eliminate the problem of slush lines left after a flood. One more item, that has not escaped our attention is the three un-usable lights in the rink. We are after the electrical department for the promised repairs. One item that bears mentioning is the lock policy in the arena. Recently, we acquired a complete set of master arena locks. Our policy on this is simply that we will not supply locks for the four dressing rooms during any tournament. This policy has been imposed since our last set of locks were lost from tournaments *n the past. In closing, please do not hesitate to call me if you have any problems, or if you wish to book any special ice times. Thank-you again for your compliance with the above policy, and with the problems that we inevit- ably encounter. They even have a productive green house which supplies them with fresh tomatoes, green peppers and flowers in February! They look back over their lives as guides and out- fitters with warmth. But it’s tough getting into the business now. When they started they only needed three seasons as a guide behind them, plus some equipment and horses. In 1968, though, due to some illegal guiding and other problems, regulations were tightened up. Now in order to be licensed as an outfitter one must have 24 months of service. “That makes it tough for young fellows,” Gene said. With the hunting season only three months long — that means about an 8 year apprenticeship. And it’s costly. The average price for a hunting area in the north today is $400,000. But Gene adds, “I think if a person really wants to get into guiding — there’s nothing like it. And it has a good future — you’re harvesting a renewable resource, as long as you look after it...even this economic slump is a boon to outfitters...the American money buys a lot more today.” “Outfitting is a great life,” Gene says. “It’s the only life,” Mickey adds. Bennett wants more financial disclosure Premier Bill Bennett wants new legislation that will require more explicit disclosure of elected officials’ fin- ancial holdings. He also has asked for fresh guidelines de- fining conflicts of interest. In addition to members of the Legislature, the rules would apply to such agencies as school boards, municipal councils and Crown corporations- A major information campaign will encourage public awareness of B.C.’s health system and the need to use physician services responsibly. If British Columbians made one less doctor visit each year, the total saving would be $50 million, said Health Minister Jim Nielsen. A $3.5 million extended care unit will be built on the grounds of Peace Lutheran Intermediate Care Home in Fort St. John. Approval for planning and construction has been given to the North Peace Care Home Society.
