OVER THE EDGE | ~ 13-27, 2008 wea 2 Additions to the University will Enhance Student Life HaAKON SULLIVAN Srare Waiver With the lives of students be- coming more complex and more stressful, more space is needed to cool down and relax as well as hav- ing some extra space to study for a midterm or write a paper. At UNBC there are two projects in progress that will satisfy the need for spaces such as this. One such project is the Northern University Student Center (NUSC) which has been planned for in the last year by NUGSS. The sec- ond project is an expansion in the library that will enhance the benefit of studying in the library. The new student center will have a wide array of services that any student can take advantage of. This $2.3 million facility will contain large rooms for clubs and offices as well as numerous food services such as a sandwich bar, a coffee bar, and a pub. Also, the pub has potential to be the largest in town thanks to its large event space, meaning that pub nights will no longer have be to held off campus. The food service contract- ors in UNBC need not worry about losing too much money over these food services as a non-competition clause has been inserted into the building lease. NUSC will not be completed by this semester as planned earlier but construction will begin this month with it being completed this Sep- tember. The delay was caused by taking time to work out the lease agreement with the legal counsel and the bidding process for con- tractors took longer than expected. Also, as with all other construction projects in BC, the cost of con- structing this building has risen past initial estimates. To help counteract this, NUGSS has been hoping for more sponsors to take a share in the costs of the construction. Even with the increase in construction cost, NUGSS has assured us that they still have fiscal responsibility as one of their top priorities and all is well with the NUSC budget. The expansion to the library is being constructed and will consist primarily of four new bookable study rooms that will hold one to four people each. There will also be a comfortable study area furnished with leather furniture that the library purchased a couple of years ago and more study carrels for the studious. “Coffee Bar” style seating will also line some of the windows on the east and west side of the floor. The map area is being relocat- ed into this space to allow for the storage of air photos in high dens- ity shelving which is much needed since they are currently sitting in boxes on the floor making it difficult to retrieve particular photos. More shelving space will also be used to store the print journal collection and there will be more shuffling of in- formation among the other areas to fill in the empty spaces left behind. Construction of the expansion will be completed on February 15. With these additions to the uni- versity, the social and the study ex- perience in UNBC will be greatly enhanced, creating a university that offers memories and knowledge that can never be forgotten. NUGSS Implements Changes Simran LEHAL News Epiror NUGSS introduced directorial changes while promoting upcoming events at this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). Although ,, the AGM was postponed for a week after the minimum amount of students needed in attendance the first time was not met, many nevertheless turned out in the Wintergar- den to hear new plans being imple- mented by their student govern- ment. NUGSS proposed, and success- fully passed, a new position that will merge the current CASHS and CSM representatives into one. Although some concern has arisen over the potential decrease in di- versity of students represented by NUGSS, the new board vacancy will be filled by a second Associate VP Social. This second VP Social will undoubtedly help the current director increase NUGSS’s pres- ence on campus. During the AGM, NUGSS also presented their auditors report for the year. Currently, NUGSS has a $126,000 surplus which will be used to help fund the new North- em Undergraduate Student Centre This $2.3 million facility will contain large rooms for clubs and offices as well party will be March 15 at as numerous food services such as a sandwich bar, a coffee bar, and a pub.” (NUSC) opening this fall. Con- struction of NUSC is.to commence within the upcoming weeks. Regarding transit and transporta- tion issues, NUGSS has. responded to student concerns about paid park- ing at the Northern Sport Centre. 70. stalls near the eastern end of the lot are available on a first-come-first- serve basis for all students with a valid UNBC parking pass. As well, NUGSS is currently preparing for a U-Pass transit referendum to be held in early March. Under the pro- posed deal, for a tuition fee increase of $48 per semester, all UNBC stu- dents will be able to access all Prince George buses during the term. NUGSS is also preparing for sev- eral upcoming events for the stu- dent body: Winterfrost will be held March 1 at the Cariboo Steak House, a St. Paddy’s Day the Hart Community Centre, and preparations for another NUGSS Idol are commen- cing. Event successes for the year have included a good :student body turnout for the dodgeball tour- nament and the first successful pub crawl. NUGSS is planning on injecting fresh blood into their organization with the commencement of the upcoming election period. Nom- inations must be brought to the NUGSS office the Friday before Reading Break. Although NUGSS curiously failed to provide a formal question period at the end of their AGM, NUGSS has commented that directors are
