Over The Edge Page 8A TS RAreYy SUPP Levent March 23, 1998 The First Ever Literary Supplement : (or three weeks of phone tag/voicemail hell) By Everett Cole | have to admit that being the person in charge of organizing the first ever Over The Edge Literary Supplement was both an honour and something of a chal- lenge. What started as a small project soon had me scrambling with some of the largest and smallest publishers in the world calling the office. The interest shown not only in the paper, but also in the campus itself has been phenomena! from. all parties | have spoken with during this project. There are a few people that have made this pro- ject a joy to work on, the first of which springs to mind are the people at the newspaper who made this happen and took direction from someone they hardly knew. Secondly, while many book companies were responsive to the idea of students review- ing books, HarperCollinsCanada and the local press, Caitlin Press, were instrumental in making this actually happen. | rather expect that there are more books coming from these publishers Over The Edge and others, and it is from this expectation that | think that this will become a regular fea- ture of Over The Edge. In closing, a love for reading is shared by many students and it is this aspect of post-sec- ondary education that has allowed me recently to partake of my favorite vice. Please, read on, and enjoy. Actually, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Flyboy is a colourfully playful look at the streets of Toronto seen through the eyes of a uni- versity student named Ryan. Not entirely sure who he is, he simply knows that he can turn into a fly, a fact which frightens and intrigues him. After meeting a_ girl named Cassandra in a greasy spoon/cof- feeshop (who later reveals her own super- power) he discovers a great deal about the world around him. Through poetry evenings, dialogue between well-estab- lished characters with a great deal of history, and an excellent sense of Ryan’s insecurities about language, Flyboy establishes a world of artists and intrigue that asks the reader to listen, process, and compre- hend life from an entirely Joint Degree Program i University of Alberta : Faculty of Business : Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics pest move dvance your forestry and business skills together to form a strong career foundation in the dynamic forestry industry. An exploratory work of fic- tion that probes deeply into the various forms of activism in our modern society, Flyboy is able to entertain and _ delight while still managing to discuss pertinent social issues such as Cancer, Corporations, and Sexual Exploitation. As Munroe’s first major release, Flyboy is a great text. Full of comic book references and fanciful ideas, Flyboy embodies the spirit of learning and play that is inherent to each of us.
