Over The Edge UNBC’s Official Student Newspaper Volume 6, Issue 10, February 21, 2000 By Melissa Bostrom As | walked into the CNC gym last Friday night, a thought started circulating in my already over-stuffed mind. | wondered if UNBC students know that all basketball games played by _ the Timberwolves have free admission (with valid 99/00 student ID). Plus there’s the added bonus of supporting the basketball teams from UNBC and watching some great games. The women’s team played both Friday night and Saturday. Coming into the Friday night game, they were 7th in the standings of 9 teams; the top 6 go to the playoffs. Their opponents from North Vancouver, the Capilano Blues, were 5th with a record of 5 wins and 5 loss- “Photo by Melissa Bostrom Dana Larsen, keeping the guys in ay Saturday’s game. es. Also, there were factors beyond the control of the T- Wolves head coach Loralyn Murdoch: two of her players were out injured, leaving her with the starters and three players on the bench. The T-Wolves ‘women came out strong and with lots of confidence. Still, as the second half started, some of the UNBC players looked tired. They had lost some of the confidence they had in the first half, and allowed the Blues’ offense to dominate for the rest of the game. The game ended with a 72-53 win over the T-Wolves. Leading scorers for UNBC: Jennifer Bondaroff 12 pts., Nicole Kerr 10 pts. and Alicia Woods with 8 pts. Saturday’s game started with the T-Wolves leading 11- 6 at 15:36 of the first half. By half-time Capilano had >| the lead by two, 35-37. More defensive rebounding was a key to the game, but the height of the Blues’ s was still a problem for UNBC. Like in the second half of the previous night, the physical game was there— the T-Wolves were making their shots—but the offense and the mental game behind it faltered. Assistant Coach Lee Huebert said after the game that in the second half they also had problems with fouls by the T-Wolves. However, he added that the post players were doing well with rebound- ing and had a very strong first half. Final score for the game was 84-64 for Capilano. Leading scorers for UNBC: Adelle Pereira 13 pts., Heather Hausot 13 pis., Nicole Kerr 12 pts., and Karla Stedham with 11 pts. This weekend the lady Timberwolves are going to Victoria to play Camosun College, whose record is 2 wins and 11 losses, right behind UNBC in the BC Colleges’ Athletic Association standings. The week after that, on February 25th and 26th, UNBC will take on the University College of the Fraser Valley. So come out and watch your Timberwolves \ in the last games of season before the playoffs. The men’s team also played on Friday and Saturday, both games after the women, also against the Capilano Blues. The score for most of the first half was a trade off after every shot. At 14:30 UNBC led 12- 11, by 5:53 the score was tied at 32. By the end of the first half, the Blues were leading 46-42. The teams were even- ly matched offensively and defensively, yet the game would be won by the team who kept making the plays and sinking the shots. Throughout the second half, the lead was again tossed back and forth like the ball itself. With 4:08 left on the clock, UNBC had the lead by two 78-76, with 2:09 left Capilano had the lead 80-79. ‘It came down to the final sec- onds-of the game, with the packed crowd of the CNC gym sitting on the edge of their seats. In the end, UNBC tri- umphed and won the game 86-85. Head coach Reg Carrick was pleased with the way his T-Wolves played, say- ing that the fast pace of the game was the style of play he wanted. In losing Brent Sevigny to injury previously, the players lost one of their leaders. However the players of the bench stepped up and played their best, allowing the T-Wolves to maintain and win the game, showcasing the work ethic and discipline that comes with playing a team sport.
