WHERE PRISONERS DAREN’T TALK * ALCATRAZ ISLAND stands in the mid- dle of San Francisco Bay. White cliffs rise sheer to a height of sixty feet from the water's edge, and atop of them stands the worst prison in the world—a prison that even the roughest and toughest of American crooks fear. There are no locks or bolts on the doors. Everything is worked by electricity, con’ trolled by the warders. To avoid any trouble, there are mirrors fitted all over SHADY REST INN Proprietor, TOM KINKADE FULLY LICENSED BOATS COTTAGES Good Fishing and Bathing QUALICUM BEACH, B.C. Page Thirty-two Reasonable Rates the prison so that the guards can actually cee around corners. It was here that Al Capone was brought when charged with evading income tax. As you all know, this prison broke even Al’s spirit, and he was a tough lad. No, he wasn’t beaten and ill-treated. On the contrary, he was allowed to read all the latest magazines and newspapers; receive the choicest cigars sent to him by his friends and hangers-on. Crooks at this queer gaol are beaten by silence. Not a word is uttered. Everybody goes about his job without speak- ing. To break this rule means trouble— and the prisoners, knowing what kind of trouble to expect, behave themselves! While Capone was in this prison of the living dead his mother, who came to visit him, was concerned in an unusual incident. Before a visitor is allowed to see a prisoner he or she has to pass in front of an electro-magnetic eye. This machine actually registers the amount of metal the visitor is carrying, for the police know that some of the visitors are tough guys who would probably try to smuggle a gun to their friends. Anyway, when the time came for the elderly Mrs. Capone to step in front of the machine, the needle pumped so much that every official -ecame suspicious, and two women warders took Mrs. Capone away to search her. What a shock—and a laugh—they had when the lady warders reported that Mrs. Capone had no gun on her. It was her corsets that had caused all the trouble! HIS PLACE SISTER SMITH was called upon for testi- mony at a revival meeting. She humbly declined in these words: “I have been a transgressor and a black sheep for a good many years, and have only recently seen the light. I believe that my place is in a dark corner behind the door.” # 3 - Brother Jones was next called upon. Fol — lowing Sister Smith’s meek example, he caid: “I, too, have been a sinner for more than forty years, and I do not think that — I ought to stand before you as a model. I think my place is beh‘nd the door, in a dark corner, with Sister Smith.” ALL FIVE WERE KILLED FIVE policemen—three specials and two : regulars—were patrolling a Coventry, Eng ~ land, street when a bomb was heard falling. © The three specials threw down. The two regulars fell on top of them, trying to shield them. But the bomb fell almost directly on them ,and all were killed. FRASER & HORNE M. I.
