BRANTFORD, WINNIPEG, REGINA, CALGARY. 3 EDMONTON, VANCOUVER Page Fifty-two trol will give a new efficiency to law en- forcement by saving vital seconds that are now lost in line telephone or vehicle com- munication. Already a nucleus of the future system is in operation in Barrie where Provincial Police are working out operation and maintenance problems. Based on this, an, expanding programme of personnel training will be undertaken. Already C.G.E. has given top priority to the pro- duction of the electronic equipment so that it will be available when that training is complete. By May it is planned to have the first phase of the system in operation ; by September, the complete system. Ex- pansion into Northern Ontario will be undertaken as required. The only difference to the public eye will be a 6-foot antenna atop the familiar black-and-white police cruiser. But in a section of the trunk compartment will be a compact and sturdy 60-watt receiver and transmitter by which the police will be in communication with other patrol cars of the area and with their local and district stations in order to pass informa- tion to and receive instructions from the district and provincial authorities. The new system will be Frequency Modulation (F/M), and it is planned to operate on three frequencies between 35- 44 megacycles. The special merit of FM is that it provides clear and dependable reception that is almost entirely free of static and interference, which will help to ensure that communication will be main- tained at all times even in the centre of a severe electrical storm. The ingenious use of the three frequen- cies will permit messages to flow simul- taneously between district stations, be- tween local stations and between mobile units. Delays in passing important mes- sages will be reduced greatly in this way. Provision will be made in the future for an increasing use of devices which will automatically relay or record messages and so reduce the manpower required to operate the system. District STATIONS IN Many Towns Tentative plans have been made to locate district stations at or near Chatham, London, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, Mt. Forest, Barrie, Belleville and Perth, the headquarters of their respective districts. Toronto area will be served by the central station near Aurora. Because of the size of Districts Eight and Nine, each will have similar sub-stations near Peter- borough and Cornwall respectively. By these means the police will obtain almost complete coverage of all parts of South- ern Ontario, even, the most remote. The institution of an FM radio system will be a milestone in police operation in Canada and will create a new phase of Canadian industrial life devoted to its maintenance and the development of similar systems elsewhere in Canada. “We Treat Your Clothes White” PEERLESS LAUNDRY DRY CLEANERS LTD.
