She stated that on Monday, April 10th, whilst staying together at an hotel in Liver- pool, they looked through the morning paper. After leaving the hotel Galbraith asked her whether she had read about the murder at the Salford Docks. She replied that she had, and Galbraith then said to her that he knew the dead man, and, in fact, had had a drink with him the previous week, and he then asked her whether she had noticed the description of the Chief Steward at the bottom of the paragraph. She had jokingly asked him whether it was him the Police were looking for and he replied that it could be in view of the fact that he had been with Percey the week before. Mrs. X. then suggested that he should go to the Police and give them what information he could, but Galbraith replied that it was the Salford Police who were investigating the murder and he would go when he got home. Mrs. X., in her statement went on to say that after breakfast the next day, Tuesday, they were unable to get a newspaper in the hotel, but immediately on leaving Galbraith bought a paper and, after glancing through it, said to her that the Police were still looking for the Chief Steward. Following the detention of Galbraith ex- haustive enquiries were made at all likely places in the Docks area; in the vicinity of Mrs. X.’s home and in Liverpool where they had spent the week-end, with a view to getting a complete picture of his move- ments at all material times. These enquiries were particularly successful, and the Police were able ultimately to account for the whole of his movements following the mur- der until the time of his arrest, with the exception of one short gap of about three hours. In NEED OF MONEY It was also ascertained during the course of these enquiries that Galbraith had, for a considerable period, been short of money and had been in the habit of obtaining from the officials at the Merchant Navy Shipping Office loans or advances of his ‘Pool’ money and that on April 5th—the day prior to the murder—he had attempted to borrow from a ‘Pool’ official the sum of £1 but had been successful only in borrow- ing 10s.
