overtheedge 21 Feb, 1996 p =a. se University Policy Unfair to Students Ian Lorenz === Bureaucracies and institutions always seem to have unfair policies that only work are ato discourage and rip off the public. UNBC is no different. It is the university’s cularpolicy to deduct 60% of tuition fees if a student withdraws from class in the fifth n ofweek. This is, for the most part, a good policy. This is because as far as the university nuchis concerned, they are owed this money because a seat that could have otherwise been on “given to another person was taken up. And for administrative costs, etc. However, tthatthis policy only makes sense when a student drops a course. Students should not be col-charged any penalty, at any time, for changing from one class to another. Yet this is dge, exactly what the University does, even when a student transfers from one half full 996)-class to another and no extra space was taken up. [ do not follow the logic of charging an already cash strapped student 60% of their tuition after attending less than 20% ition®f class. And this being the case, I do not understand why the University does not deduct 60% of tuition for joining a class in the fifth week. The reason I am so angry k outabout this is because the policy is being used in a bad spirited way and not the way it _ thatwas intended. As a result, I am out $90. What I did was to make a straight transfer “of one 3 credit class to another because my professor expressed doubts as to whether tated! Would pass his class. The University told me that this was a moot point as far as they vote, were concerned. The University incurred no expense or inconvenience due to my red."dropping and subsequent adding of a course and to charge me $90 is unfair and i= runkynjust. The policy needs to be modified, clarified, or dropped, so I will be going pbefore the senate on February 23 to try and change the policy. I respectfully asked the senate if the student body and media would be allowed to attend as my hearing — rit will affect them in the future. This request was denied. As the senate claims to “follow uti-the principles of natural justice and fairness”, I do not see how my request for a Above: Tim Dressel one of the Candiated fr m will affect them in the future. This request was denied. As the senate claims to “follow the NUGSS February Bi-Election. "Don't the principles of natural justice and fairness”, I do not see how my request for a forget to vote on Feb 21,96" Photo Paul Berard costless transfer can be reasonably denied. However, stranger things have happened. Since this is a policy, it is very hard for one person to change it and I fear the senate will be rigid and unbending. However, with student support and pressure, it is quite likely this silly and offensive policy can be changed. There are petitions that can be signed to show your displeasure in this policy. They are located in each residence and » at the front door of the University. I beg you to sign these as it is one of the very few ways to fight an unjust policy. It takes so little time and each name on the petition is ammunition for a fair and equitable change to University policy. Otherwise, the | University will continue to rip students off. =. —___—__——+ Al s E TIM DRESSEL TU ROBERT N. REID, HBSc., O.D.
