C. Page Thirty-eight world’s finest police forces ; older than the R.C.M.P. “Both men are adding these ribbons to already long strings,” he pointed out, describing how Sergt. Clark, as captain with the 72nd Highlanders won the Mili- tary Cross at Amiens, and Const. Smith was awarded the Military Medal in ser- vice with the Canadian Mounted Rifles, during the Great War. As senior judge for the County of Cariboo, Judge Woodburn expressed his opinion of them as very fine men and very efficient police officers. He recalled how Sergt. Clark has had five commendations in general orders, then pointed out that “this is the only sub-division not under an inspector or sub-inspector, although the territory covers approximately 43,000 square miles.” He stated that Sergt. Clark has charge of the city detachment, McBride, Vander- hoof, Fort St. James, and the district de- tachment here, in addition to the radio division and gaol, with 18 officers under his command. “Sergt. Clark is proud of his fine force and of his 24 years service in it; and we are all proud of him as a citizen,” stated Judge Woodburn. P. E. Wilson, K.C., for 32 years city prosecutor, joined in similar sentiments with anecdotes of his early acquaintance with both men. Const. Smith was attested May Ist, 1925, while with the city of Vernon police force upon it being absorbed into the Pro- vineial Police. He had earlier served as a constable with the Glasgow Police prior to leaving Scotland for Canada where he served on the city police forces at Kam- loops, Penticton and Victoria. He saw service with the 2nd C.M.R.’s. He went to Anyox in April, 1926, was transferred to Prince Rupert in June, 1930, continued east to Smithers in May, 1931, and in March, 1933, came to Prince George where he has been ever since. R. G.
