Many others, particularly among the American G.I.’s running this line during several war years, had much less complimentary descriptions of this historic railway. If this is your lucky day, you are soon clicking merrily over the rails. Skagway is just slipping behind as the train starts to climb, and looking ahead, you can see the tracks stretch- ing up a steep grade along the tor- tuous Skagway River, and disappear- ing around a sheer rock wall. Two and sometimes three locomotives are hooked on to the short train, as on and up it carries you, over the famed “Trail of ’98,” still discernible at some places in the rocky gulches be- low the tracks. Over Dead Horse Gulch the train rumbles, and you imagine yourself a bearded prospec- tor, your worldly possessions on your back, stumbling up the snew- covered rocks, hoping to find a fur- tune in gold nuggets at the end of the Trail. There are many lakes and streams here, and the clear, spar- kling water looks inviting to the fisherman, though rather chilly to even an ardent swimmer. SOURDOUGH’s DINNER You glimpse Lake Lindeman, where many Klondikers built their rough whip-sawn boats, to sail down Lake Bennett and eventually down the Yukon River to Dawson. The train stops on reaching Lake Bennett, and everyone piles out and into the old fashioned dining reom, where tables are laden with a Sour- dough’s dinner of moose-meat, po- tatoes, beans and blue-berry pie in season. The last bite is hastily stuffed in as the train whistles impa- tiently, you get a hurried vision of MT. VIEW CAFE GOOD FOOD WELL PREPARED “SERVICE WITH A SMILE” McBRIDE B.C.
