JOHN - - TWELFTH EDITION Bedaux and his wife with de Duke and Duchess of Windsor, after Bedaux made his abortive attack upon the Canadian wilderness. The Napoleon of the Rockies had met his Waterloo. The signal for retreat was sounded. Trappers and riders, coming in to Fort St. John, likened it to a rout. With a two-foot fall of snow blanketing slippery hillsides, and surviving horses sagging at the knees or swaying under half-loads, there was danger of the whole party being marooned in the bush for the winter. While exhausted horses wallowed south- ward through the muskeg, Bedaux with be- draggled ladies and hand-picked cowboy sailors piled into five batteaux and commit- ted themselves to the treacherous waters of some unmapped stream. As though he hadn’t tempted fate enough the ubiquitous leader decided on still another attempt to dramatise the expedition for the silver screen. This time the spot selected was a dangerous rock-walled canyon through which wrathful waters writhed and tossed in whitecapped anger to soar through a dangerous chute where a granite pillar bi- sected the current into two narrow foam- flecked channels; only one of which was navigable. “One of the boats will go ahead with the movie man and the camera and slow up for the other boats to pile through on each other’s tail. Cut your power right down soon as you get over the first fall so you'll get a close-up of the rest of us as we hurtle past,” ordered the leader. “The only way we'll ever get through that canyon alive,” growled a grim-faced packer who knew something about white water, “is to let the boats through one at a time. Then if one of ‘em gets caught the rest won't pile in and drown the bunch of us. I wouldn’t accept the responsibility,” he added flatly. “That's all right,” Bedeaux responded airily, “Ill accept the responsibility myself.” And with this cold comfort they prepared to meet what many of them were certain was their doom. Again the pistol barked. The lead boat, with obedient but chalk-faced camera-man facing up-stream to depict the oncoming flotilla, shot down the first chute. Caught in the swift waters and swirled onward at racehorse speed the pilot obediently cut the ignition completely. With spluttering pro- test the engine died just as the advance guard of the scow flotilla leapt the crest and bore down upon them. Bereft of steer- age way, wallowing like a log, twisted breathlessly end for end, the gaping movie man stared wild-eyed into a sea of yeasty froth when not engulfed in tidal waves of hissing water, his ears assailed by the B.C.
