Cassiar had as a visitor, Capt. Peter Anderson, of the Canadian Armed Forces, Victoria. Officer in charge of Cadet Corps in B.C. with direct res- ponsibility for 120 Cadet Corps throughout the Province. Capt. Anderson has over 32 years service in the Armed Forces having worked his way up through the ranks. During the 39-45 war he spent time in Italy, North Africa and in Europe. He also spent two years in Korea during the Korean conflict. He has had several postings since becoming a Commissioned Officer which included Staff Officer at the Military College at Kingston, but tells me that the most interesting and rewarding position he has held is the one he holds at present and this is working with the young people in Cadet Services of Canada. Capt. Anderson came here at the invitation of the Cassiar Lions Club to explain to them what is Involved in forming and sponsoring a Cadet Corps. During his visit here and with the kind permission of Mr. Henderson, he spoke to the ehildren interested in joining a Cadet Corps. and explained to them what is expected of them as mem- bers of a Corps and what type of activities they might be able to take part in should a Corps be formed here. He answered numerous questions from the children such as what type of hair cut do we need, to how much do we get paid for summer camp. There seemed to be quite alot of enthusiasium amongst the children at this time. In the evening Capt. Anderson attended the Lions Club Meeting and explained what is involved in forming and If a Cadet Corps is formed here sponsoring a Cadet Corps. it will be open to girls and boys aged 12 to 18. They will be issued Cadet Clothing free of charge which will be turned in at the end of each training year. will be given a number of F.N. rifles and .22 rifles ‘which are live firing types the F.N. is a .308 rifle and will be for outdoor firing and the .22 will be used on the indoor range. Ammunition is provided at no charge From The Lions Ben Something new was introduced to the social scene in Cassiar on September 28th. The Lions Club imported a first class Bavarian Band all the way from Seattle to Play at their Beer Festival. The lively band waltzed and polka'd a crowd of 350 fun loving dancers until 2:30 the ‘next morning. The beer and wine flowed freely and every- one had a good time., Thanks to all the ladies and Lions who gave so free ly of their time to decorate the hall, serve Bavarian food and beer, and various other chores that go to make a Beer Festival successful. A chance for all you gamblers, the new season for Bingo started up again October 17. Bingo will be held on Monday evenings with the next Bingo being held on October 28th and ewery second Monday thereafter. starts at 7:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome. The Cassiar Lions Club in conjunction with Engra-Hill Fashions - Watson Lake will be holding a FASHION SHOW~in the Rec. Hall on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30th. It will be featuring the latest in fashions including gowns and. dress es for the Christmas Festive Season. Proceeds in aid of the Swimming: Pool. Bingo The Grade X Home Economics Class under the direction of Mrs. ‘Judy Henderson, hosted a luncheon for the teachers on Thursday, October 10th. The twelve course luncheon consisted of seafood appetizers, delicious homestyle vegetable soup, filling Italian style ravioli and lasagna, and "northern" inspired delicacies. This scrumptuous serving was a first for the year and the teachers hope that the girls will have em for lunch again soon. He is the Logisitics held annually in Victoria. Also compul- sary in Cadets is St. John's First Aid Courses and the Corps will be entitled to send a team to the competitions If we have a team ready by this time it will fly from Watson Lake to Victoria and compete and then have one day to tour around the Capitol City before returning by air. This of course would all be provided by the Cadet Corps. Cadets also have the opportunity of attending Vernon Military camp for summer training; this is only for Cadets 13 or over. A 13 year - Old goes for a two week course and Cadets 14 and over may go on several different types of courses which are for 6 weeks duration. Those Cadets going for 6 weeks training will be paid $100.00 for going to camp. At any of these trips all expenses are paid for by the Government. Cadet v . ssed that this was not a plan to attract young people in to the regular Armed Forces but a program to teach people to be better citizens and a little more self reliant. ' As there are a number of formalities to go through in starting a Corps, it will be a short while before we are certain that one can be formed here but it is fairly certain that we will have one and the children will be notified along with the parents as to when and where the initial meetings will take place and who the Cadet In- structors are going to be. WESTERN LOTTERY TICKETS The first preliminary draw of the Western Canada - Lottery will take place October 23 in Winnipeg, announced Ron Wilson, Acting manager of Yukon Lotteries Administra- tion. The draw, which is expected to last three to four hours will see 1908 tickets drawn. The first eight tick- ets drawn will be the winners of the major prizes ranging from $25,000 to $250,000.
