January 27 2003 Public Announcements WOMEN’S CENTRE OPEN TO ALL WOMEN IN PRINCE GEORGE! Come and join us for our OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, January 30th, 11p.m.- 2 p.m. at the Northern Women’s Centre at UNBC. The Centre opens its doors to women and men to share refreshments, home-baked goodies and a sampling of the services and programs the Centre has to offer. The Women’s Collective and Sarah Boyd-Noel, the new (interim) coordinator of the Women’s Centre, welcomes everyone to familiarize them- selves with the Centre’s activi- ties. There are some misconcep- tions regarding the Centre that need to be dispelled. First, it is thought that the Centre only serves the female population of UNBC. LET US KNOW! 960-5633 mandate is to serve all women in the greater Prince George area! Women of all ages and backgrounds are invited to participate in the Centre’s activities. In addition, the per- ception exists that women attached to the Centre are men-haters. “We love the men in our lives, but we also value the spirit of comradery that the 24-hour women-only environ- ment can offer!. Men are wel- come to use the library (by appt), come to the three Open Houses throughout the year, and to assist with some of the Centre’s events (e.g. December 6th, Day of Remembrance). The Centre has several important functions including: educational opportunities (e.g. workshops): information and resources for women in need; including a library; 24-hour access to a women’s only The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to announce environment for women in cri- sis; and volunteer opportuni- ties to assist women in devel- oping skills and competencies in many areas of the Centre’s functioning. Most of all, the Centre is a comfortable place to hang-out, put your feet up and chat or snooze! The Centre currently has 3 practicum students, including Mieke, a graduate student in educational counselling who is available for counselling women in the community of Prince George (til early April 03 - please call 960-5632). Other happenings include: the very popular Mentorship Program which matches pro- fessional women (mentors) with students (mentees); Jezebel’s Jam - a music and cultural festival to be held in March in recognition of International Women’s Day; (stay tuned!) and a knitting that its Relay is going national! This year, our Relay will join all other Relays across Canada under the name “Relay For Life”. Last year, more than 53,000 people participated in Relay for Life across Canada. Over $10.4 million was raised for cancer research, information ser- vices and support and pre- vention programs. Last years relay in Prince George had more than 2,900 participants and raised over $293,000. This year, Prince George’s Relay For Life will take place on May 10th and_ that Massey Place Stadium. We will be holding two Relay Rallies. The first will be held on February 20 from 7-8 pm. A_ second Rally is scheduled for February 27, from 12-1 pm. A Relay Rally is a chance to get informa- tion and answer any ques- tions you might have about Relay For Life, pick up regis- tration packages and share ideas for team fundraising. The rallies are open to team leaders and anyone inter- ested in becoming involved with Relay For Life. Both ral- lies will take place at the Canadian Cancer Society office at 401 Quebec Street. You must phone Susan or Kristina at 564-0885 if you plan to attend either of these rallies. Over The Edge Page 15 group which meets’ on Wednesdays 5-7 at the Centre (near UNBC Wintergarden). In addition, Gena Kaebe and Joanna Caceres, UNBC and CNC Social Work students respectively, will be organizing workshops (e.g. one on Body Image/Eating Disorders in February) and emergency information kits for women presenting with various needs to the Centre (e.g. pregnancy; housing, sexual assault, etc.).
