ops Gaol on the morning of August 9th.
Back in the Kamloops Gaol awaiting
<ecution, James needed continual watching.

As the fateful day drew near, James
played his last card.

For weeks he had been collecting pepper,
and placing it in a paper tube gummed
together with oatmeal porridge.

On the day before the execution, Const.
Simson opened the condemned man’s cell
to give James his breakfast. With a quick
movement the murderer blew the contents
of the tube in Simson’s eyes. Half blinded
the constable staggered back, but he had the
presence of mind to swing at James with
his baton. Half stunned by the blow, James
reeled back into the cell, and Simson
slammed the cell door. If the prisoner had
obtained possesion of Simson’s keys, the
way to freedom (through the gaol office)
might have been opened.

“What the hell do you want here?”
“T've come to see you, son,” was the
athetic answer.

“Well, I don’t want to see you,” snapped
\e prisoner as he turned on his heel.

Two other prisoners scheduled to hang
ith James were a Japanese named Taka-
ashi, convicted of slaying a fellow country-

Three scaffolds had been erected in the
gaol yard and at 8.00 o'clock on the morning
of August 9th, James and Takahashi pre-
pared for their last appearance on earth.

As the sentence of the half breed had been
commuted to life imprisonment at the last
moment, the third scaffold was not required.
