The Rat River Portage will always be
remembered as a “tough go” and we
soon found that out for ourselves. Pass-
ing Destruction City, where the ‘98ers
constructed smaller boats for the ascent,
we “tracked” up the Rat River, the
thirteenth day bringing us to the sum-
mit and the veritable Utopia of Loon
Lake. The most beautiful sight to both
of us was the water going down hill
for a change. So we stopped eating the

the Porcupine River which carried our
canoe 100 miles downstream to the
Indian village of Old Crow in Central
Yukon. Tired and hungry (our grub
