U.S. Police Adopt F.B.L Pistol Course As Training Standard * This article appears in The Shoulder Strap by spectal arrangement with John Edgar Hoover, Director of the F.B.I. * N EVENT of some importance A to police pistol shooters in the U.S. was the announcement this spring from headquarters of the National Rifle Association that the F.B.I. Practical Pistol course had been adopted as the standard for training by U.S. law enforcement agencies. This will take the place of the old Camp Perry (or Police Course) with its familiar twenty-five yard technique of slow, timed and rapid on the standard 25-yard target. Apparently the decision has been made to place the emphasis on the practical rather than the match-style performance, and in this the F.B.I. course should prove an _ excellent training program. For those not acquainted with the course, here’s an outline: The targets are the well-known Colt Police Silhouette, a man-size black legless silhouette on white. The F.B.I. only score the K values. To commence the course the shooter takes his position seven yards from the target where ten shots are fired double action, in the elapsed time of twenty-five seconds from the command draw to the final shot. This includes reloading time. The shooter then goes back to the 60-yard line, where he starts again with the reloaded gun in_ his holster, and 35 spare shells in his pocket. At the command “commence firing” he drops to a prone position, fires five shots, reloads while prone, reholsters his gun and advances to the 50-yard line. Here he fires five shots sitting, five prone, and from behind a wooden door-like barricade three feet in width and six feet high, he fires five shots with the left hand on the left- hand side and five on the right. On the left-hand side the right hand is placed against the edge of the door, the thumb acting as a crotch to rest the right hand wrist. The perform- ance is reversed on the right-hand side. Total time for the course is six minutes and ten seconds. Chief advantage of the course lies in the fact that it familiarizes the individual with a type of shooting he might reasonably expect in the course of his duty. In this respect reloading in the prone position is a valuable exercise. A disadvantage might be the danger of accident on a crowded firing line when men are shooting in squads. However, the F.B.I. take care of this angle by classing as safety vio- lations: (a) Drawing the gun before sitting. (b) Drawing the gun in such a manner as to cross the leg with the muzzle.
