Do you remember those stories you learned
about Moses and the Israelites in Sunday School when
Did they seem to be unreal because
That is how I felt until
I realized how much we resemble those people. What

_ was God trying to tell them so long ago? Is He not trying
- to tell me the same thing?

Let me share with you two of those ancient but
timeless stories that opened my eyes this month, The

. first occurred when God called to Moses from a burning

~ bush.

God needed to work through Moses and told

- him, “I have come down to rescue (my people) from

the land of the Egyptians and to bring them out of that
land into a good and spacious landtik. So now, go.
I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the
Israelites out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3:8, 10)

Can you imagine how Moses felt? He rebelled
and told God no. “You mean You want me to uproot
my family, return to Egypt and tell PHARAOH to let
his one million slaves go free because You say so? He'll
have my head!” Moses pleaded with God to change
His mind; “Who am I?” (Exodus 3:11)... What should
I tell thent (is your name)? (vs. 13)... “What if the
Israelites do not believe or listen?” (Exodus'4:1)...
“T am slow of speech and tongue.”’ (vs. 10) Then, when
Moses realized that God had thought of all the angles
Moses said, ‘O Lord, please send someone else to do
ltets :
Moses was scared to trust God to the point of
risking his life but finally stopped his rebellion and said
yes to God. He became a great man through his obe-
dience. God can still accomplish great things and raise
up great men and women, but we have to be willing
to obey to His quiet voice.

The second incident took place shortly after
the Israelites escaped from slavery in Egypt. (There
were 603,550 Israelite men, as well as women, children
and flocks.) They travelled for two days and then crossed
the Red Sea during the second night which brought
them to the Desert of Shur. ~The people continued
walking for three days in that desert without water and
without complaint. They probably had a couple of days
water supply for themselves which was supplemented
by milk from the herds, but how long would those ani-
mals have given milk without having anything to drink
themselves? Perhaps the people expected to be led

to water; that God in the cloud would know of and meet.

their needs. Perhaps they thought that God would not

be interested in such an every day thing as water. You
know, the idea that God has more important things
to worry about than the comforts of His people. Perhaps
too the people did not think at all, they simply followed

the God in the pillar of cloud. We don’t know what
was going through their minds but we do know that
they didn’t communicate with God about their thirst.
The people had resigned themselves to their plight.

The morning of the fourth day dawned and the
people followed the pillar ot cloud as usual. By this
time everyone would‘ have been exhibiting some signs
of dehydration. Yet, in their weakened state they plod-
ded on for the rest of that day with no water. But at the
end of the day they came to Marah. Is that water they
see?! Yes!! I can almost feel the pleasure and relief
amongst the people. Maybe they even felt joyful. Maybe
they broke out into a run towards the water. God cares
for them! He has brought them to water. God under-
stands their needs!

Then they arrive at the water. It is bitter and
undrinkable. This means almost certain death. Their
hope, joy and relief has been dashed. They will watch
the herds, one another, and their children, die of thirst.
Was it not better to be slaves in Egypt then to watch
ones own flesh and blood wither and die in the wilder-
ness? Would it not be better to be a slave in Egypt,
beaten and over worked, than to hear the dying pleas
of a child without water? The moans, ‘What are we
to drink?” were spoken to Moses but directed at God.
Can you almost taste the dust in their mouths? Resigna-
tion through desperation, gave way to seeking help
from God.

Finally, “Moses cried out to the Lord, and the
Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into
the water and the water became sweet.” (Exodus 15:25)
Death had been averted; God had rescued His people.

_ The next day God led His people to Elim where there —

were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees.
Quite an abundance of water for a desert!

These stories teach us how God would like us
to respond. In place of rebellion we should offer obe-
dience. In place of resignation we should talk things
over with God and ask for His help.

Last week I wrote down a list of everything
that bothered me enough to be called a problem. There
were nine items. By the way, my dictionary defines
“problem” as a question proposed tor solution. - As I
examined my list, I discovered that in each case I was
either rebelling against the situation, refusing to cooperate
with the Lord, or I resigned myself to the problems

not impossible! I managed it!) I.was not actively seeking ,

solutions. When those Bible stories opened. my eyes
{had to laugh at myself. Why am I so stubborn? So,
I told the Lord that I am willing to accept the challenge
of those problems and at the same time I asked that
the situations would be eased. Paradoxical? Yes! Im-
possible? No! Lord lead me. Lord teach me. I'll let
you know next month what happens!

beast back, and finally, Ed Bauer
who drove Brock down to Bell II
to make the successful repairs.
We owe all of you a huge debt and
cookies are ready at our place.
