a at UUC =\0 Making Time For Memories Three business grads take initiative to create a yearbook for their peers By Andrew Starkes and Taireez Damji With finals coming up, and the last of the semester’s assignments due for marking, this time of year can be espe- cially hectic for most every student. Apparently not too hectic however, for Angela Lawson, Taireez Damji and Daniel Hejcman, three com- merce graduates who didn’t want to leave UNBC without some type of a reminder of times spent with fellow gradu- ates, and less than a month to act upon preparing a year- book for print. The idea of a yearbook for the graduating commerce students was conceived dur- ing the reading break by graduating commerce stu- dent Daniel Hejcman (Production Leader) However, having no previous experience in the design and layout of such a project, Daniel needed someone on the creative end of things to promote the idea and bring it to print while he took care of the funding and necessary resources. Enter Creative Director Taireez Damji, and her chosen Creative Associate Angela Lawson. In just a couple of days, Angie Did somebody say “Jose?” and Taireez were able to complete all of the necessary forms, questioners and posters necessary to pro- mote their project, with only one week before the photos of the graduates would have to be taken in order to meet the printing deadline (printed so that the students could pick up a copy before the end of exams, after which they would have had to be mailed out to many students-too inconvenient and _ costly). The next stage of the project would be the actual pho- tographing of the students...this was my job, and it all started off very well, with great results after the first day of shooting. The suc- cess of the second day how- ever proved much less grati- fying when the prints turned out, or not, for half of the stu- dents photographed. There was you see, an electrical malfunction with my camera, only bringing itself to my Daniel Hejcman, Taireez Damji and Angela Lawson wanted to give their peers a momento ofn their accomplishments During the promotion of the yearbook, Daniel was able to recruit much appreciated funding from many eager sponsors including Co-op, NUGSS, BUGGS and the president's office, enabling means to see it through to finality. attention the following day. This little “ruling” in favor of my good friend Murphy how- ever, turned out to be less of a problem than anticipated. | was, with the fabulous help of Taireez and Angie, able to save face with retakes the next day, and in the end we were actually able to entice a few more grads in to partici- pating. AS my mom would say...all is well and ends well! Feeeewph! So there you have it! Three eager (and very busy) stu- dents take the time to insure their time spent here at UNBC will live on, and per- haps set the stage for similar trends to follow. |, Taireez Damji, would like to thank Andrew Starkes per- sonally for taking the time to ensure the success of the Commerce 2001 Yearbook. He helped us overcome many different obstacles through his time, effort and patience with us. The most important aspect of this pro- ject for us was to ensure that grads were represented in the yearbook and to offer grads the choice to have pro- fessional photos done for them at the same time. As a graduating student, | under- stand how busy students can be. The Yearbook council wanted to provide a service that would “kill two birds with one stone”. | believe that all the students that took advan- tage of Andrews’ photo pack- ages were not disappointed. His work was of a very high caliber and his services were offered at very reasonable . grad gowns. rates. Our Yearbook was made at the least possible cost through Andrews’ gen- erosity. Angela, Daniel and | would like to also thank all those that were involved with differ- ent aspects of the yearbook. We would like to thank Sarah Steel and Gord Brownridge for their support and help with our layouts. As well as Ranji Manhas, Jennifer Choy and Pam Parhar for helping us with the photo shoot. We would especially like to thank Barry from the Copy Centre for jumping everytime we needed an order filled at the last minute. And_ the Bookstore for lending us the This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the UNBC administration and faculty. | would like to personally thank Alex Reed for his help and support with this project. And finally the council would like to thank all the students who supported and contributed their person- al photos for the Yearbook. It is my hope that this book is just the beginning of what is to become a yearly event at UNBC. Venomous Shane Schepens (continued from page 3) have a choice during last year’s election since you were appointed by acclama- tion. Mr. Schepens, it is obvious that the venomous purpose of your article was to defame A.J., Emil, and | prior to the election. Your accusation of Emil and | of possible using the office material for our campaign is _ absolutely wrong. The fact is that | did not run. for office, and there was no need for me to cam- Continued... paign from the office (as other people claimed) or to use any office material to make my campaign posters. This fact itself has under- mined your credibility, and | do not need to go further to explain every claim that you made against A.J., Emil, and |. Besides, the space limita- tions of this newspaper would prohibit it. However, | still think that it would be a good idea for NUGSS to establish a Nobel Laureate of Journalism to recognize an exemplary journalist like yourself. If | had run for NUGSS last election, | would have included this in my plat- form as a part of my strategy to get your vote. Would You Have Voted for Me on this Platform, Mr. Schepens? Jose Guterres
