A POLICEMAN’S EPITAPH

IN AN address at the funeral of Const.
Frank Barker, of Brighton, England, who
was killed on duty after he had shepherded
a party of school-children across a road,
the officiating clergyman said:

“God rest thee well, brave Policeman,
and guard thy sleep in that fair haven,
where thy soul should be. With proud
thanksgiving Brighton thinks of thee, good
shepherd of the Master’s little sheep. Thy
kindly hands oft shepherded them all. And
thou shalt hear at last the Master’s call,
‘Well done!”

same three men, John Andrusiak and John
Ashton Barnett were brought before Magis-
trate Graham and heard themselves com-
mitted for trial on charges of murder, ware-
house-breaking and shop-breaking. Malin
and Olivia Holmes were bound over to give
evidence at the Coroner’s inquest. No
charges were preferred against either Miss
Holmes or Malin.

After a lightning three-day series of
chases, raids and gun-battles that kept Win-
nipeg in a fever of excitement, the entire
bandit gang had been cornered. “Mike the
Horse” had cheated the gallows only to die
by a suicide bullet proved to have come from
the gun that had claimed h‘s victim, while
his companions in crime, clapped behind
the bars, heard themselves sentenced to
twenty years in Stony Mountain Peniten-
tiary by Judge Robson of the Winnipeg
Assize Court on October 13th, 1940.
