+ DOG: POLTGA IN THE WAR on crime, policemen in several cities are being given valuable assist- ance by trained dogs. When some of the Berkeley, Calif., patrolmen start their night “beat” they are accompanied by alert Dober- mann Pinschers schooled to help catch law- breakers. Training of the dogs is under supervision of C. A. Roy, official “schoolmaster” of the Berkeley police department’s dog force and owner of the International Police Dog Training School at Richmond, Calif. At this school the dogs undergo 18 months of training that equip them for trailing, pro- tecting officers, facing gunfire, disarming criminals, taking sticks or other weapons M. C. In Berkeley the dogs are useful in the widest variety of ways of any police de- partment in the United States. For instance they are used in the patrol cars, which is an innovation in police work. Stop THEATRE CRASHING Chief of Police J. A. Greening, of Berkeley, says: — “In Berkeley we have the University of California, and our dogs have completely stopped theatre crashing by celebrators after big football rallies. The crowds used to force their way in without paying admis- sion. We stationed four dogs at each lobby entrance, with four policemen four paces behind each dog. The crowd moved for- ward, the dogs growled, bared their teeth and advanced a step to meet them. Thoy in front retreated and pushed those surging from the rear into the street. We've hal no trouble since the first few lessons of thy kind.” 4 TRAINING IS IMPORTANT An important work is training a dog jy trailing by nose. Once the dog has become proficient in the country he is brought tp the city and given experience in trailing op crowded streets, through the multitude of scents which he will encounter.
