Salute | TO A SPLENDID FORCE THE CROWS’ NEST PASS COAL CO. LIMITED FERNIE, BRITISH COLUMBIA Page Sixty-two Mounties Check Transients One summer two Royal Canadian Mounted Policemen were stationed at Blue River to deal with transients. It was in the depth of the depression and every train East and West was loaded with unfortunate men travel- ing back and forth on freight cars and engine tenders, in search of employ- ment. With one of these constables, Ernie Beck, I had a lot to do. As a matter of fact he arranged to get his meals at my home, as facilities for accommodation were not of the best. One of the railway men told me of an incident he noticed at the station Shortly after the R.C.M.P. came. Constable Beck was on the platform watching a train come in. He didn’t notice a transient drop to the ground from the rear of a baggage car almost in front of him. The man saw the policeman, and chances of escape looked dim. He thought quickly, however, and snatched up a broken hammer handle lying nearby and bent over and tapped a car wheel. He marched boldly along the train and right in front of Beck, bent under the train, and industriously banged the nearest car wheel with the stick, and so moved on to the next wheels until he was safely down at the far end of the train when he threw the hammer-handle away and_ disap- peared. The hangers-on and real car inspectors got a bang out of this. We * THERE ARE MILES AND MILES A Swedish mile is really six of our miles, plus 1133 yards. The British mile is used throughout the Commonwealth and the United States. * usually had three or four transients in the lock-up doing a few days under the vagrancy section of the code. One time we had a couple of young fellows who typed out a criminal law course for us during their term of incarcera- tion. Drunk on Shaving Lotion There was the time we discovered a horrible character lying drunk in a ditch. He was dead drunk through drinking Yardley’s shaving lotion. He was in such an utterly filthy condition we could not think of putting him in our cells. We couldn’t leave him there, but we had to do something. Finally we dragged him into Dr. Bramley- Moore’s woodshed, covered him with a blanket, and left him to sleep it off. When the doctor returned from a call and went to get an armful of wood he discovered a patient he didn‘t want. The cell room blanket gave the show away, and he galloped across the lot to the Detachment, only to find that the police had left on the ten o'clock freight for Birch Island and wouldn't be back until the next day. One time a couple of drug addicts dropped off a freight in the early morning hours, and woke the doctor up for a “fix.” He refused them and sent them on their way. They re- turned and pestered him twice later, Finally he appealed to the police, so we caught them and called the doctor, who gave them temporary relief.
