No pop etc. First aid was supplied in a small building near the office by. a nurse (Robin Hood). The doctor came later (Dr. Reilly). When the mill opened in 1952 there were four floors, approx. 7 screens etc. What is now the Lab. was then called the Q.S. room (Quebec Standard). The dryer was on the main floor and fired by coal, if no coal, then wood in any shape or form. =a af , edt. : 2800' Ore Chute - the original method of transporting the ore doun the hill. The General Office still stands. This was divided into three separate parts. Camp Manager, Engineers and Main Office. Later the main office was divided to give the Office Manager his own little cubicle. The Company banked with The Bank of Commerce in Whitehorse at that time. Due to transportation and road conditions, payday was a hit and miss event. You were paid by cheque, if there was enough cash on hand you might be able to cash one. Everything you bought was charged by the Company so the only ones that needed money was the poker players. They had it and it sure moved around, The Mine Dry was the poker parlour in those early days. The Dry also was supplied with a washing machine, so that the men could do their laundry. The water for this purpose was heated by pipes hooked up to the heater, and stoked with wood which you had to carry in by the armfull. It invariably happened, you have gone for more wood, and on returning found all the hot water gone. (Someone took a shower). Start all over again or give up in despair. Troutline Creek, where Casstiar's residents first drew their water. There was no school in those days. The children took correspond- ence by mail. The first Xmas Party (Open House) was held at the original House 130 (Manager's Residence). The Barmen, if they could be called that, were very free and easy with the drinks, The host was heard to say, "Easy on the liquor and heavy on the water''. They ended up serving 0.P.
