“To Williams Creek, are ye manin’?” asked
Mary.

“Where else?”

“When that time comes,” the Little General
laughed, “if ye’re wanting a cook, sure I'll
offer myself again!’

“Ye’ll have the first chance, Mrs. Mulligan,
ma’am. But I reckon I’d have to cut: your
wages for a start like!”

“Cut me wages,” cried Mary, “in a place
that’s rich like nowhere else on earth! Well
now, I’d be more like to be askin’ more!”

But before our friend Hunkydory made the
move to Williams Creek, as he did in the end,

other prospects had opened out for Mary
Mulligan.
